It is the most important thing you can do for your water quality besides salt. Takes all the bad out of the water and no matter how good you think your water is - it's bad
 
You can let it go down the drain, save for plants, do laundry but just don't cook with or drink it
 
I own 3 hydrometers when I first started and they always read differently. I learned that lesson in the first 3 months very important and definitely the best investment. As far as changing how the tank looks, I would say that a lot of LPS make the tank visually pleasing like frogspawn or hammer or elegance. the constant bounciness of the corals or flow make it look very nice. my favorite is my green tipped frog spawn.
 
Brand of refractometer you would recommend? I don't test for the reef stuff like I should. What test kits would you recommend? Especially for a nano.

Okay but my dkh is low but Ive been using a dkh buffer

Do you test your mag and calcium as well? What are they at? Your alk, calcium and mag go hand in hand. One being off even when using a buffer can show that the other is off whack as well.
