my triton text came back excellent but literally comes in with 0 iodine in the system. Weird. Trying to see which would be my best supplant to get the system up and dose say weekly for keeping it level

While I do not generally consider iodine a useful supplement, I'm not sure how any iodine supplement is better than simple sodium or potassium iodide, which is actually what most brands are. Iodide is the bioavailable form of iodine present in the ocean.

That said, some people use Lugols solution (because it is cheap and available at many pharmacies), which I do not think is an optimal form since it contains the largely unnatural form I2. I2 is reactive with organic molecules, including tissues.

I discuss iodine forms here:

So just buying any iodine supplement, ie: Seachem, Kent etc will all serve the same purpose? There isn’t one that would be better than another? I have a salifert test kit and will check but want the one that is “safer” than the others if accidentally overdosed or something

Yes, within limitations. Look for simple iodide additives. All of those are equally "safe". Kent Marine iodide is fine if you want to get a hobby brand.

I'd avoid Seachem since it is more than just iodide and it doesn't say what it is but there may be issues not being able to detect all the forms with a kit.

That's likely a fine product, but note that if you use a kit that only detects iodide, you'll be underestimating the concentration added.
Very true,,The Salifert test kit measures both,,but have to take into account the home use test kit results with a "drift" in levels for say.

FWIW, iodide has greater bioavailability than iodate (iodate may not actually be bioavailable at all, without transforming to iodide first).

When I experimented in dosing iodate, it accumulated, while iodide at similar dosing rates of dosing rapidly depleted.

Is that why Iodate is found in higher concentrations in NSW than Iodine/Iodide ..
What would be the effects of the accumulative Iodate in the reef aquarium ?

Use a supplement that contains only KI and water like aquavitro vibrance or similar

There are various processes that use and interconvert these forms, and overall, those processes average out to having somewhat more iodate than iodide. :)

I found that excessive iodate was correlated in time with discolorations in mushrooms (can't recall if it was browning or paling, it was a long time ago), but I could not prove cause and effect.

Does ozone convert iodine to the more bioavailable form?

Iodide (I-) would be converted into I2, hypoiodate (IO-) and iodate (IO3-)

Iodate (IO3-) will not react with ozone.

Wow so basically makes it distasteful to organisms, right? Can it loose the oxygen atom and convert back to iodide?

Yes, and some organisms have enzymes to do that (or at least, they have enzymes whose purpose may be something else, but that can accomplish that). :)

This may be a fun read:

Thats pretty cool. Phyto and diatoms convert it. I only read the abstract but its interesting that dinoflagellets dont consume iodate. Perhaps this is why water changes make dinoflagellets worse, its giving them iodide to survive. Or did i get the forms backwards? Lol

I'm using the Triton Iodine. I'm using the Core 7 system as well. Seemed to make sense to use their formulas, as they are calculating the dosages based on those supplements.
