Best Leds for Chaeto?

Planning to probably pick up one of the Growstar UFO lights...but debating the 150w vs the 300. Fuge size is 22 x 15.5 x 15. Those that have the light, would the 150w cut it? I'd go with the 300w no problem if spill wasn't somewhat of a concern....

I think there will be light spill regardless unless you put the fixture at like 4" off the water. I haven't had much growth outside of my fuge, but still plan on hanging a piece of pond liner on either side.

My fuge is 10.5" x 17.25" x 11.5" and I have the 150w at about 6" off the water. I believe the 300w is about 4" wider, so I'd say the 300w would be a good fit for your fuge. You could use the 150w and have less spill though. I would buy the 300w on amazon and then you can return and buy the 150w if it's too much, that is what I'd do.

I just picked up 2x the Osram Sylvania Par38 17w LEDs. I have a small refugium section, maybe 12x12", so 34 watts.

About $80, which is about what I think I want to invest at this point in a refugium light, given the size. Also I like that it's a known manufacturer with a 2 year warranty. I just know those typical chinese LEDs in my sump would rust quick given the fan I have blowing over the fuge. Also I like that it has 2 cool white LEDs, as I use the fuge light for just general working in the sump, so it's not going to look terrible. I keep my sump front above the fuge open due to the fan blowing and excess heat. So 34w of heat I can handle, 90w would be overkill for the size, but I'd also have to get a chiller as I'm up past 83 in the summer. It also has a good amount of spectral data which I honestly can't read most of it, but it looks legit! Just thought I'd share my decision process.

I'd like to know people's experiences with longevity, as that was part of my decision making. After watching that brs video on black box leds, I veered towards paying more for a name brand, but who knows if that will pay off. I certainly don't buy name brand for everything, but the osram purchase was kind of a compromise.

I have the Growstar UFO and I have been pretty happy with algae growth so far. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and watched my softball sized cheato ball grow into a volleyball sized ball in about a week. That's impressive growth!
I added a Fluval Sea Nano Marine LED full spectrum that I had hanging around from an old 15gal tank. I figured it couldn't hurt to have the extra light. If I thought the Fluval Sea Nano Marine LED was enough on it's own, I would not have even bothered with the Growstar.
I like the mount for the Fluval. I'm working on a way to mount the Growstar. I have both lights laying on a glass pane at the moment. It takes up space but it works.

This is the Fluval Sea Nano Marine LED...

I DO have a concern with the Growstar light though and wonder if anyone else that has one noticed what I notice...

I get this white powder that comes through the side vents and the fan. I don't know what it is and I don't know if it's harmful for my reef.
Anyone else see this with their Growstar light?

This is the white powder I am talking about with the Growstar LED.

Any ideas on what this stuff is and if it can hurt anything in my system?

I definitely don't have that, not related to the light. Your sump area looks like it has a ton of salt spray, and it's on other stuff. My guess is it is related to that. I wouldn't let it build up for the longevity of the light.

I recommend these for the growstar or any ufo. Super sturdy and have a ratcheting clamp to easily adjust height. Bought on amazon. All I did was drill a screw into either side of my tank center support and placed the hooks on there. If you don't have a center support just screw small hooks from home Depot or Lowes into the inside top of the stand and hook them on that. If you don't have any wood on the top of your stand, buy and cut a 1x3 to length and screw each end into your end supports, then mount the hangers to that board with hooks. Suspending the light is way better than resting it on anything for a variety of reasons (safety, heat control, etc)

I had a Home Depot 6500k led bulb and had good growth...But wanted to try a new new bulb and Bought this off of Amazon (TaoTronics Led Grow lights Bulb , Grow Lights for Indoor Plants, Grow Lamp for Hydroponics Greenhouse Organic, Plant Lights ( E27 12w 3 Bands ) But my growth slowed....So I add my Old one ( now I have 2 running ) and Now I have mad growth.....

If this doesn't work. You should try this bulb, http://www.lightyourreptiles.com/jungle-dawn-7-13w-led/.

I have a friend who keeps reptiles, and a couple reef tanks. He had an extra one of these laying around from one of his vivariums, he put it in and he's has really great results because of it. This website does a really good job of describing this light, so I'm not going to try haha.

I think what i'm going to do is take the Growstar out, blow it out with compressed air and run it for 12 to 24 hours outside the sump to see if I still get that build up of powder or not.
It LOOKS like I have a lot of salt creep but I don't. That's just water from me doing stuff that wound up on the glass panel. That glass panel is from an OLD tank hood. I need to clean all that stuff.

As far as mounting...
The fuge section is way off center so the center beam of the stand is not an option. If I can neatly hang the light like you have yours hung, that would work. If I can't then I will have to figure something else out.
I thought about a heavy duty suction cup but that idea scares me because it leaves the light hanging in the right place but if the suction cup were to fail, the light drops into the fuge and... FiZzZzzz!!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I went with the Growstar 150w UFO, the one with a similar spectral graph to the Kessil h380 that utilizes a 3000k Cree COB in the middle.

I will take some PAR readings vs my PAR 38 and let you guys know (I assume someone is curious how this light performs) and also come back and update in a month or two on growth.

I would definitely like to know your results. I have this light in my “cart” but unsure if it will be another payment to the trash like my current fuge light which grows the heck out of gha but my cheato is floundering.

If you scroll up I posted my results, it kills it. 2x growth over my par38, having said that, I'm not sure that a light alone will solve your issue. You need to manually remove all of the gha from your fuge so that the chaeto can establish itself as the dominant macro in there.

Is my Cheato dying? Also is it safe to run GFO when trying to grow macro algae such as Cheato?

Your chaeto doesn't look like it's dying but rather accumulating detritus and maybe some cyanobacteria/algae. I have run gfo with chaeto before sure, just realize they are competing for phosphates. I've only done it when my phosphates were extra high for one reason or another, then took the gfo offline and let my chaeto handle it at normal levels.

On another note, I would strongly recommend sectioning off your chaeto somehow from your other equipment. It looks dangerously close to your skimmer in those pics and could easily get pulled in and cause your skimmer to overflow, among other things. If you don't have a separate refugium section, you can use eggcrate covered in netting or make a bag out of netting (sealed with zip ties or something similar) and let the chaeto grow in there, trimming once it fills the bag and starts to grow out of it.
