Just had a new sump built using 7 inch socks. What is the best way to clean them? Years ago I remember when I was running 4 inch on another tank I would put them in the washing machine

Well I use the washing machine these days for my filter socks

I put them in on a 1.5 hour cycle (because I know which button that is! Lol) with a small amount of bleach and leave it to run.

I then put it on again for the same time but with no bleach to rinse it all out and then just leave them to dry

The come up very well, and no more using a hose outside. The washing machine is just so easy

Switch to mesh clean via sink ;)

Make diy ones clean never [emoji23]

Same, washing machine with an extra rinse cycle :)

Washing machine while the wife's not looking [emoji16]

I keep 10 changes (20 socks) in rotation so it's only a monthly chore. I rinse them out and store them in a bucket until I wash them.

Washing machine with some bleach and an extra rinse. Let them dry in our back room and store them there. Made the mistake of letting them dry in the laundry room once and it seems they absorbed some of that smelly good bead stuff the wife uses and it made my skimmers go super crazy lol.

So do yall turn them inside out ? How do you ensure your getting all the stuff from the inside. I use the washing machine as well however I take them out back and spray them out mostly turning them inside out to get rid of as much as I can first.

When wife's out shopping, throw them in dish washer with vinegar, the vinegar will clean dw too.
Don't forget to buy extra socks

Wasn't allow near washing machine anymore. Soak it with bleach for 4-5 days then hand wash. Use 2 layers, mesh into felt, big stuff in mesh, easy to get off

Hydrogen Peroxide is actually safer to use than bleach and actually kills the organics instead of just dying them white like bleach.

I've used bleach before and it "works" just fine but figured rather be safer and it's more effective.

I personally just spray down the socks with hydrogen peroxide either after taken out of the sump or right before the wash.

I just rinse insideout with the hose and then rinse in rodi but I know that doesnt do 100%. I've tried soaking in rodi after my process to check how much remains and the water still gets dirty... probably way my nutrients are so high but I know that'll be the end of me if I tried putting them in the washer

wash machine on delicates lowest water height and hot with vinegar I have extras but usually, just rotate them and let them dry for a week or 2 before I put them back in the rotation

Me too.

When I change filter socks I turn them inside out while they are still wet and throw them in a bucket in my fish room. After I use all but the last set I throw them in the washing machine with bleach and hot water. My machine has a setting for an additional rinse cycle and I use that. I then run them another time with hot water and the extra rinse cycle to wash any remaining bleach out. Let them air dry most of the time unless I am in a hurry (Forgot to wash and need new socks) then I just throw them in the dryer for a short time.
