My daughter is new to saltwater fish. She has the biocube32 but I was told the filter might not be good enough. I don’t understand the media stuff she is supposed to have. Can someone break it down simply for me? She’s having an issue with the ammonia and nitrate levels.

Welcome to R2R. @rmorris_14 can you help another biocuber out?
black ish appearance GIF

Welcome!!!!!’ A lot of people upgrade their media basket (middle chamber) to an intank media basket. This is preferred by a lot but not absolutely necessary. I still use the stock media basket. I have filter floss on top. (Where a stock carbon filter would go) Then chemipure elite directly below that. On the bottom I have marine pure media balls.
Can you post the water parameters?
How old is the tank and how was it cycled?
how often is she doing water changes and how many gallons each water change?

She got the tank April 15, new tank. There is 20 lbs of live rock in there, 32 gallon tank. She got her first 2 clownfish last Sunday. The water was tested by the store & she was told she was good. We were told not to change the water yet. Tested it today & ammonia was .5 ppm and nitrite .25 ppm. I’ve been dealing w/the same fish store. I called & they told me to put 3 capfuls of Stability each day and that maybe her filter isn’t strong enough. The fish haven’t really been eating and one just swims from one end to the other most of the time, my daughter read it could be stressed.

False positives of 0.25 are common. Do you know what test kit they are using?

Dosing Stability was a good suggestion from the LFS.
