Biota Captive Bred Mandarin

I can't find a web site for them. Where did you order it from?
You can get them from algae barn. They cost $80 but they say they are guaranteed to eat frozen and pellets and it come with free pods and phyto plankton
I am thinking about trying one of these myself so I want to follow along.

Pics??

I got one of AlgaeBarn's / Biota's "bonded" pairs last week and they have been doing very well since I received them. They are very active and seem to have interest in frozen food/pellets when they hit the tank though frankly I haven't seen one eat either yet. Fair warning the ones I got were tiny, maybe 3/4 inch each but were definitely fat and happy. I'm good with the smaller size but if you're looking for a show piece it may be a few years ;)

Here's a pic of the male which is a little out of focus but you get the idea.

Thanks for the pic. The fish are currently being shipped out of Florida Directly from Biota while we build out our won fish facility up here in CO. This is an exciting new offering for us and it fits in perfectly with our vision for sustainable aquaria! Hopefully there is more support from the hobby with these fish now than there was for ORA a few years back. I think (hope) people are finally catching on to the importance of buying captive bred fish and can justify the higher price. Also, we send a free combo of 5280 Pods and OceanMagik phyto, a $60 value with each fish order, so that should help too and het the fish eating healthy foods right away after their journey. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, thanks!

I am very happy to report that currently both are doing well! I had thought the smaller of the two was a goner a few times, but then I thankfully spotted it in my tank!
Hopefully they will both continue to grow and thrive as they really are amazing fish to watch!

I may got plenty of back lash for this, but I feel it is our duty as hobbyist to really try and support captive bred whenever possible! Will try and get some video of them at some point!

You're absolutely right about us as hobbyist having a duty to support captive bred

Hi there, we will have the Biota Mandarin fish back in stock by January 2017. Biota is expanding their facility in Palau and we are getting ours up and running to be able to hold, condition and ship the fish directly. Biota also wants to let the fish they have now grow out a little bit more to reach a more stable size. So stay tuned for January and thanks to everyone who ordered a fish, we know they weren't perfect but thanks to you all now we know exactly what we need to fix and how to fix it!

Are you taking preorders for January?

I agree that in general captive bred and aquacultured should always be a consideration as responsible hobbyists :) I love the fact that the Biota Captive Bred Mandarins come with a supply of pods. Considering the dietary needs of this fish, this is how they should always be sold, in my opinion, even if they are conditioned to take frozen food. This is just a added benefit of breeding them in captivity. I'm currently growing my pod population within my reef to help support a mandarin. I should be ready for a one as soon as Biota have them back in stock. I'll be sure to place an order.
