A strange thing happened today. I topped off some water this morning and added some iodine. No swings, checked parameters last night and everything was still within my previous ranges. 25g Water change was on Sunday. My Build Thread Here…

My frag disc that had about 6-10 blue discosoma mushrooms…

melted, all of them… I am so confused.

ok maybe not all of them except the larger ones. I initially threw the disk in the trash not wanting deal with it. I just took out to the garage and shook it vigorously in RO water then placed it under one of my rocks.

Also my toadstool leather, which was situated on the rack next to the disk, was completely retracted. It’s now starting to extend its polyps after I removed the disk from its vicinity.

Only thing I can think is a lighting change… I had been running a modified saxby profile

I mimicked the radion actinic setting recommendation from BRS mixed with a saxby type profile to try to get better coloration.

Nothing else in the tank is looking off… all other softies and LPS are open and sunning.

Update: I went to check the bucket I rinsed the disk in and saw a small bit of mushroom I thought might be able to be saved… turns out no… it was actively melting

So I thought better about putting the disk back in the tank. I went to check it and take pictures… the remaining mushrooms were still melting.

This is the stalk from the largest mushroom… I think I’m seeing messenterial filaments here.

I cracked the disk up after seeing this and removed the palys that had come in on the disk onto a cone plug and put it with my new zoa garden arrangement. Threw the rest of the disk away.

It seems after much searching that there isn’t much in the way answering why this happens. I am leaning towards the lights being the culprit of their demise.

I am confused, you said they melted but they just looked angry in the pic on the sand. My guess is the RO water killed them? Mushrooms will shrink tiny when mad.

They can sting and were probably irritating the nearby toadstool.

No they straight up melted into brown snot.

looks like a bacterial infection of some sort.
regardless, I would advise you to change the lighting program to something simpler, or even the stock saxby program with lowered white/red/green channels.

So, you severely abused a frag of blue mushrooms and then they died... I think you answered your own question.

Wow.

What a brutal and ugly thing to say to another reef keeper.

They were fine last night, I came out this morning to find them dripping off the frag disk. I pulled it out and dipped it in RO water to clear the melting sludge off the frag disk.

There’s no reason to say something like that. Guess I won’t be asking for assistance here anymore.

TO CLARIFY: YOU SAID, " I initially threw the disk in the trash not wanting deal with it. I just took out to the garage and shook it vigorously in RO water then placed it under one of my rocks."

I'm sorry if you felt I was "brutal" to point out that it's not surprising that a frag treated like this did not survive.

Rude. And not to mention prejudicial. It was complete slime. The whole thing was just absolutely gone.

Next time I would just put it in some tank water in a fish and turkey baste the dying flesh off and put them back.

It’s really hard to kill a whole mushroom colony :)

Maybe something nearby stung it?

I still disagree. You asked why the mushrooms didn't survive, and based on the info you posted, I gave you an answer.
The good thing is that if that's the cause, you don't need to look for other problems with your tank, lights, etc.

The cause wasn’t because I removed it from the tank, disposed of it, and then retrieved it to try to salvage it. That is a very bizarre conclusion.

I didn’t wake up, throw my coral in the trash, then try to save it.

You said you THREW IT IN THE TRASH. Not bizarre at all to consider that this might be the cause of it not surviving!

I was also thinking that possibly the params were off on the new water causing a swing

Lol why I got this person blocked.
Some.people can't except words from other people and that's ok.
Imo it could be the smallest thing like a difference in salinity or something.
I'd wonder the parameters of the tank u got it from. Hths you.
D
Yup I just realized I could hit the iggy button…
