BTW, what kind of snail is nocturnal? There is one in his tank (rather large) that we have never seen during the daytime. Have no idea where it is...comes out only at night.

Definitely a tricky size for HOB style filters. I would probably look for something marketed towards fresh water Beta tanks to see if you find anything helpful. may still need to mod it some but size wise I think that probably gets you in the neighborhood.
