Flow is a major issue in almost everybody's tank, they just don't know it.

As a newcomer looking to learn as much as I can. I was quite intrigued by this. Because I believed water chemistry was important but lighting was equally important. As it turns out flow is more important than lighting. Of course this is within reason. Intensity and technology is second to water quality and flow. As long as you have the right Spectrum and an adequate intensity.

In other words comparing metal halides to T5 has little warrant. Considering the flow and chemistry are good. There may be some comparisons which come into play here. But the bottom line is the most effect will be observed from flow and chemistry.

I think that so long as we have been successful reefrs who use halides, or T5 or LEDs. It is safe to assume that all methods can be successful as long as you maintain chemistry and flow. This illustrates the point made by Jason Fox. Sorry if this feels like a rant.

I think this is true. People used to say LEDs could not grow SPS. Now it is more about personal preference, controlling shimmer, shadowing etc. It is less about a competition between methods. I used Metal Halide in the past and my anemones loved it. In the early nineties it was top of the line. My LEDs seem to work fine now for SPS and my anemone. I do not need the higher electric bill or extra heat of MH.

Oh I know where my cyano is happiest when I get it. That's actually how I know my flow. Funny, but true.

This is a great observation. I actually keep my dual returns positioned in such a way to control where Cyanobacteria will appear when it does (which is on smaller, isolated rocks).
