Also made a DIY top for the tank so he doesn't jump out and so my cat doesn't eat him.

Holes in the eggcrate may not be small enough to keep that fish from being a carpet surfer. I’d make a screen top for it. I have tried eggcrate before, so just talking from (bad) experiences.
