Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

Put the return up and over the back of the aquarium. Use those two pipes as a primary and emergency drain. Herbie method.

It's quiet and safe that way.

Take a look at my plumbing.
If I choose not to, just go Durso, are there ways to safeguard not overflowing the DT?

the way its plumbed now, you have a second pipe sort of like the herbie method, but its primary source to move the water is durso. If the durso fails it moves to the secondary which acts like a herbie. Simply put, you should be safe.

Not that I trust, but I am sure there are folks who ran for years without issue. I just had floods when before I used this method. Been using it since before it was called Herbie. I think 97 or so.

I have to agree with @dantimdad, put the return over the back and go herbie. I run a durso on my 180 fresh and although I have never flooded, it's very loud. You'll be very happy with a herbie, not just the safety factor but the noise level.

This is what i run, it doesnt not make any noise at all. Ive kept it simple.

Although its not installed in my tank, its just an overflow, the idea is still the same but just with an added bridge and connection

+1 on this...

Or I could have my tank drilled for my return to be in the tank?

Nope. I know everyone has their custom tank drilled for this. I don't. I think it back siphons too much water and I don't trust check valves. The less points of failure, the better to me.

although I certainly don't think it has to be drilled, I like a drilled return. I have always just placed my return nozels close to the surface. It helps with surface agitation and allows very little back siphon. I don't use or trust check valves either but it hasn't been and issue. I understand this point of view though.
