Let me start off saying I purchased a setup from someone else and I'm still very new and learning the whole process so please be gentle. :)

I have a 65 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump below. I have an eshopps protein skimmer (not sure of the model) and submerged return pump. My return pump is quite noisy, to the point I can't hear my tv over it at night. I was considering buying a new one that is more silent (and keeping this one as a back up) but I am not sure how many gph I should be looking at? Does anyone have any recommendations on some good quiet ones that would work?

Thanks in advance.

Consider a DC pump where you can adjust your flow and the pump is often quieter. I’ve had good luck with the vertex M1. I also like the sicce DC pumps and neptune Cor, but I think the vertex with it’s intuitive control is the best of the bunch. Look into plumbing the pump to your return line with a short segment of silicone to further deaden the noise from vibration. There are some good BRS youtube videos on this.

Best of luck!

The sicce pumps are pretty quiet. You could prob get away with the 1.5 maybe the 1.0. I have the .5 and its pretty quiet on my 29g. You can make the pump quieter by placing a silicon mat underneath it, make sure you have soft tubing when connecting the pump to the hard plumbing. Do you know what brand the old pump is. You can also try cleaning it by running it in a solution of citric acid. Welcome to reef2reef btw

Great question. I can’t make a recommendation for that size of tank, but a good silicone pot holder placed under the pump will often help a lot.
I have something under it now (kind of like a hard rubber platform) but I will definitely try this! Thank you

Jebao DC pumps- best bang for buck for starting out and very quiet. Something like a DC3000 or DC4000 is what I have in 50g - 60g frag tanks and do very well. Quiter than Simplicity and ReefOctopus DC pumps i also have.

not sure how old it is. I took apart and cleaned it but no luck. It’s like the little propeller keeps stalling.

I have one just like that. Loud, i just use it to mix salt.

i second using using the sicce silent. Probably a 1.5 good enough. If I remember the model 5 is around 500ish gp. A 2.0 will match that more closely.

This is a Supreme pump and very reliable. Should work. 400-500 gph should be more than sufficient

It works great other than the noise factor. The propeller inside keeps skipping and making a really bad rattling sound. I can handle humming but the rattling is driving me crazy.

I would take the impeller (propeller) out and make sure inside is clean as it sounds like there may be foreign material in the hole

I just got done doing that. It's still bouncing around inside there. It's so odd. I don't see any reason for it to do that but it is.

there may be a bushing or rubber end that fell out causing it to bounce around?
