So a buddy gave me this for free and I dont really understand what it is and whats its used for...?

Can someone give me a TL;DR of what this is for

Reading the bottle describes what it is and how to use it in exacting detail.
I literally did and dont get it... from what I gathered its just to add bacteria to he tank to lower nutrients in established tank? But can be used to start a new tank>?

I use it and like it! I dont have any algae issues and my water is always crystal clear. Think it helped lower my nitrates too, but this was over a period of consistently using it. Its pretty much a bacteria type supplement that eats nutrients and helps clean the water

If you don't know what's in it then why would you add it to your tank?

It is bottled nitrifying bacteria. It can be used to start a tank and can be added to an already cycled tank to lower nutrients. I've used/still use it with no ill effects to speak of at all.
+1 - I know some of the responses were not the kindest. It’s usually used to help the nitrogen cycle when starting a tank. Supposedly you can add it and add a fish, Day 1. I’ve never used it. I have a friend who adds it daily. But the bacteria in the bottle will help to break down ammonia, and nitrites into nitrates. Good stuff from what I hear. Again, I’ve never used it.

At the LFS I worked at for a while we used it to start tanks and to combat different types of algae/cyano. When we used it to start up a tank we would "play it safe" and add fish a few days later. Never had any problems, most tanks adjusted very well and had significantly less algae since it was dry rock and bottled bacteria. Hope this helps!

It’s a popular choice. I know a few ppl that used it to start tanks. Seems everyone just calls it MB7.

I know one of the responses was not kind and I hope you were not including my question about using an unknown on his tank. If so, that certainly was not an intended "dig".

No. It was the “read the bottle dude” comment. People come here for clarification and experience. It’s like getting a sham wow and trusting the manufacturers claims. I’d also want a second opinion or three. I just want people to be able to post honest questions and get honest answers. If we hound everyone for every question asked, people will be afraid to ask questions and that defeats the purpose of posting. @crusso1993 You are one of the kindest people here and we all know it. ;)

Unfortunately, I've seen snarky comments posted by the "other" member in quite a few threads. To each their own, I suppose, but it does confuse me as to why some folks just aren't very nice. I have a number of theories but that would be more for a psychology forum.

Oh, and ssshhhhh on all that "being kind" business. You'll ruin my rep! ;)

lol. Snark and being a meanie are different.

I post questions sometimes that others may roll their eyes at. I can shrug off the negative but why not just ignore it if you don’t have an answer? Maybe that’s just me :D

Thanks for the responses. I’m gonna start using, ive been having a very small turn algae outbreak it random spots of my tank. I’ve tried everything maybe this stuff can help

It won’t hurt. I’d be weary of adding too much at once as it may affect the fish. A little bit goes a long way.
