Brine shrimp babes

We have three now also. Two in the 40g and the new little one. Having issues with the two small in the 40. Both females which have shared the same nem since the lfs. Now the smaller of the two has bigger claws so she keeps pushing the other out the nem. Poor bugger has been hosting on the branching leather with the glass anemone shrimp.
None of mine hose anything.. just random rocks lol
But they look alot diff than the hosting kind

We put the nem in first for Toughie. Then when I put Toughie in I was going to put her in the breeder box next to the nem but she jumped straight off my arm into the middle of the nem and hasn’t left.

Batch 1- harvested a few hundred after 10 days approx
Batch 2- only got about 10 after 10 days
Got my eggs today so am going from 350ml set up to 1lt. Added the salt, will check the salinity, temp and ph in the morning. This is batch 3. If I have success with this one I will try having 3 1lt bottles going at various stages. Only need the larvae to be approx 5-7mm long to feed to Little Blue.

Hubby is culturing phyto, rotifers ans copepods, so I thought I’d have a go at hatching brine shrimp.

I think I’m at day 5 now since starting (I probably should have paid more attention) but it’s awesome seeing those little guys go from a powder to tiny little creatures. We have the whole setup in a cupboard in the kitchen with heat lamps, a light and an air pump. I haven’t put air to my brine shrimp yet but it’s on the list for today. Future plans are to feed them to dragonettes. Got f&m black scooters, f ruby red and hoping to get her a male and then mandarins.
Where did you get your glass containers?

@Robin Haselden maybe the two of you can give me tips for our hatchery?
If I have success I will gladly give you tips. We have no trouble with phyto... rotifers and copepods on the other hand... I’m just glad Little Blue eats frozen foods too

Awesome. My son is getting some things for Christmas to experiment with.

9:30am- temp is 27.5c, salinity is 1.018. Added more salt to get it to 1.03-1.04. Will check it again this afternoon and do a ph test which needs to be 8. If those tests are good, I’ll be adding the eggs

Salinity 1.03
Temp 28c
Ph 8.2
Eggs added...now we wait
Should start to see hatchlings in 48hrs

We have hatchlings. Thousands of them. Every little dot in the water is one. Tomorrow I will be splitting them into several jars with fresh salt water and also dosing some to our 10g and 40g tanks. 40g is fallow and the pods in there have gone crazy so the brine shrimp will be able to breed freely over the next few weeks. Then the fish come out of quarantine and it will be dinner time.

2 days post hatch. This was so successful we decided to split the whole lot between the two tanks and start again but with much less in 4x1lt jars.

40g fallow tank. The coral hermits are having fun, along with the bivalves. We can see the bivalves suck them in and then a burst of water out. The nems are moving with the particles that have landed on the tentacles. Hopefully some survive to grow out.

1.026 water. Added a little more salt to get it to 1.03. Hooked up air tubing and put it in the cupboard with the heat lamp and light to get the temp up. Need the ph to be 8-9. Since I’m using reef salt with ro water, the ph should be around 8.2, so I won’t have to make any changes to that. When the temp is 25-28 and salinity is right, I’ll add the next lot of eggs. Batch 3 I used 4 of the supplies spoons (approx 2g) of eggs in 1lt, this time I’m only going to add 1/2 to 1 spoon per 1lt jar (0.25-0.5g). Hatching much less per jar but there will be more room for them to grow out more.

Quick update...all but one jar is 1.03, added more salt to that one, will test again in 1/2hr. I found the way I had the jars arranged caused poor heat distribution in the cupboard, so have rearranged them to ensure the heat lamp reaches them all. Not long now and will dose the eggs

Now just waiting on the temp to rise.

I absolutely want those jars. I'm going to Kmart tonight!
