I know questions about brown algae get old. I also know I need to perform additional water tests to confirm the issue, but buying test kits is like paying for ID theft protection. We should all do it, but its more fun to buy new coral. I'm venting but also looking for help....Please!

I've been fighting algae issues in this tank since day 1. It's been set up for about 3 months now. Currently fighting two different distinct algae brown fuzzy algae growing all over the gravel, rocks, and glass. It has coated a Kenya tree, which I don't think will survive now. Also a dark, almost black algae on some areas of the sand bed. When I try to clean this it kind of clumps up; grows quickly, but does not spread quickly.

Ammonia .25
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0
PH 8
Sal 1.027
Temp 79.1

Not sure why I always seem to have a low level of Ammonia, but never any Nitrite/Nitrate to speak of. Feed fish 2x daily. Morning is Nori clip or flake with pumps off. Only what they eat in a 1-2 min. Evening is 1 cube mysis or other frozen food, thoroughly rinsed before adding to tank.

45 lbs of live rock from caribsea.
80 lbs caribsea ocean direct sand.
20 lbs of caribsea figi sand.
Micro ATO for evaporation.
Always use RO water from several different LFS.

Could you post pics?

Algae issues are mostly caused by nutrients imbalances etc.IME 0 nitrate is a recipe for disaster.

Here are some pics. This is after cleaning up the tank just a couple days ago. Again, only use RO/DI water from LFS

Evening @golver1 . Venting is totally fine.

Start with testing. I agree testing is expensive over time. Newer tanks it is necessary evil though. There shouldn’t be ammonia at this point. I am thinking ur using API. I like them as starter, but accurate reading on ammonia not so good. If your tank is done cycling it should have some nitrate and no ammonia.

The black may be cyano. If you can blow it off easily, kinda like a sheet it’s cyano. The brown, not so sure. May be diatoms the way it sounds. Can’t really tell from pix.

Newer tanks go thru lots of stages. Keep up normal maintenance and I would recommend Salifert or similar for nitrate, phosphate, alk and ph tests. It will eventually level out and look clean.
