Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

My wife understands the scientific stuff and pointed me to a website that had this information:

Figure 57–1 Sites of action of antifungal drugs. Amphotericin B and other polyenes (e.g., nystatin) bind to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes and increase membrane permeability. The imidazoles and triazoles (itraconazole, et al.) inhibit 14-α-sterol demethylase, prevent ergosterol synthesis, and lead to the accumulation of 14-α-methylsterols. The allylamines (e.g., naftifine and terbinafine) inhibit squalene epoxidase and prevent ergosterol synthesis. The echinocandins, such as caspofungin, inhibit the formation of glucans in the fungal cell wall.

I was explaining to her that some folks have good and fast results others do not. Her thoughts were that if the Fluconazole is either absorbed by the Bryopsis or GHA or something else in the tank, and not enough is available that could lead to slower or less than optimum results. Depending on how severe the outbreak is, the Flucon could be getting used up before it eliminates the algae. For people, it sounds as if there are cases where they load up and do a high dose for a few days and then cut back for the rest of the treatment period. So some people may need additional doses to fully eliminate it.
That's what I was thinking and why I pulled the really long stuff out. Great find and I agree with your wife ;)

Please let me know if I am correct on my calculation of the proper dosage and procedures. I ordered 10 - 200mg tablets of Fluconazole. I have a 45 gallon tank, so by my calculations at 20mg / gal, a 45 gallon tank needs a 900mg single dose. At 200mg per tablet, I will need to dose 4 1/2 tablets. Before dosing I will remove all carbon and turn off skimmer. Then the waiting game begins with no water changes for 12 days.

If you have rocks and equipment in there I would take off about 5 gallons of water volume. Then go with 40gal x 20mg/gal= 800mg. Which would be 4 of the 200mg capsules.

That sounds correct. I needed 9800 mg in my 475 dt and I dosed 10k. I basically determined my dt total and estimated that live rock offset my sump. I have a 150g sump and equal my live rock to the same as my sump.

I added 800mg to 60 gallons. More than 10mg but less than the original 20mg per gallon

I only have 4 patches but sick of trying to pull it out. Disregard the white rock, my husband took it out of his class room tank and I didn't want it just going to dry, we will add it to another tank in his class once I set it up.

I put the gsp next to a patch thinking maybe the gsp would grow over it and kill it but nothing yet

I did leave my gfo online as I did not want my phos to spike but I had the skimmer off for almost 72 hours.
I am running both my skimmer and gfo and socks. 20mg/1gal and I'm on day 5. The smaller patches thinned out got white tips and died. The larger dense patches seem to be getting effected, but very slowly. I may have to redose. I also have a very high par light system

Today when I turned my skimmer on it immediately skimmed out some whitish substance. I think that the medication is not fully soluble and the longer you can go without running a skimmer the longer the meds stay in the system.

I'm current running a test on my frag tank to test whether the treatment will still be effective if one were to continue using their skimmer as well as their gfo. I'll report back and see whether the 20mg/gallon dose is still effective if these are left online (carbon was pulled). In addition, I've also placed an assortment of bubble algae in a small mesh bag as I would like to test whether fluconazole has any effect on it.

Yeah, I seen the whitish foam in the skimmer also....hmmm

My skimmer is running but no cup and not overflowing. I have crusting dark gunk at the top of the foam cuz it has nowhere to go. My skimmer is due for a good vinegar bath anyway [emoji14]

Going to start mine on Thursday on a 15 Hasson sps nano. I'll let everyone know how it goes. And try to include picture's. Most is growing from hob filter.

Cheers,
Alex
