Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

Frustrated with not having the results everyone else is having. I think my skimmer must of taken some meds out, even though I only run it at night.

Day 5 and the bryopsis is just a little weaker. I just threw in another 200mg and will keep the skimmer off or remove the cup.
Where did I go wrong?
Dosed 8 200mg on Jan 29th
I noticed my salinity was off so had to take 1g out to correct and added a bunch rodi.
Jan 31st I added one more 200mg
Feb 3rd today added one more 200mg

Calculated Water
Combined tank 74g + 30g sump =104g minus 20% (equipment, sand rock) 20.8g
So 104g - 21g =83g use this amount for treatments.

Length x width x height divided 231 volume

TANK

Actual 46" x 24" x 21"
-1/2 inch front/back side to side
45" x 23" x 19.5"
Capacity with overflow = 87.3 Gallons

Capacity without the overflow (fish swim room) due to coast to coast overflow
45" x 19.5" x 19.5" = 74 Gallons

SUMP

Actual 37.5" - 5" for ATO = 32.5" x 20" x 18"

-1/2 inch front/back side to side
Capaticty 31.5" x 19" x 18" / 231
= 46.63 Gallons Maybe a little less due to other materials.
Little less due to baffles---say minus 1" side to side.
30.5" x 19" x 17.5" / 231 = 43.90 Gallons

Running
30.5" x 19" x 12" / 231 = 30.1 Gallons
Assumption that the running water is at 12"

@Sabellafella
Carpenter's fairy wrasse, linespot flasher wrasse, blue flasher wrasse. Vanautu Hooded wrasse, and a Flame fairy wrasse. Not sure what one of them is, it's one of my favorites, he turns nuclear purple with a white cap on his head when he's being psycho. Otherwise he looks like he's been watercolored lol.

There were lots more fairy wrasses in there until I had to lose the canopy. Since then a lot have gone floor surfing :(. I had at least 5 more, McCoskers, Red head solon, Yellow flanked fairy wrasse, purple finned McCoskers. I went a little wrasse crazy in the beginning. I miss them, I probably should get a screen top and get a whole new slew of wrasses! :D

Takes time. Give it 2 or 3 more days. Its 100 to none so far, so im sure itll work!

Even having a good cap on your tank isnt enuff. Im due for some fairy wrasses though, have to be my favorite fish plus theirs new(and rare) specimens being imported alot recently that are just asking for it

I applied the dose on Dec 21 and bryopsis is now gone. I will get pics tomorrow. Actinics are on now and pictures would not be good. I have a 400g SPS and a 75g LPS. It took 12 days to fully eradicate my bryopsis. My experience is accelerated because I had dosed Vibrance. Fluconasole is one of the finest discoveries for 2017.

I said I had dosed on Dec 21. I actually dosed on Jan 21. The pictures are in sequence to see the decay of Bryopsis. There is no bryopsis in the tank as of yesterday. This stuff works. Now I will clean the glass and once again enjoy my tank. Oh yeah, and start adding corals. :)

Love seeing these.

Day 4 update

Bryopsis is no longer visible in most areas. GHA is looking lighter but nowhere near as far along as the bryopsis. Bubble algae seems to be unaffected so far (I did not use vibrant prior). As far as parameters the only thing "off" is P04 is at .04 using the Hanna checker.

I know my calcium and MG are low but I keep having to increase the dosage not at 40ml daily. That could also be due to me opening my windows more often and the ph going up because I forgot I have a ph cut off.

EDIT: I am still running my GFO reactor and using my skimmer with the collection up still on but have a dry skim going.

@Lasse This thread might interest you and the reefing community in Sweden. (I should have tagged you sooner). As well as your colleagues at the aquarium.

Using Fluconazole to eliminate bryopsis and Debersia species of green hair algae that utilize Ergosterol in their structure. Apparently the fluconazole inhibits Ergosterol production in cellular structure in some/many species in these genus. Apparently the algaes use Ergosterol both in cellular structure but also as a deterant to herbivores, which possibly explains why these types of algaes are ignored by herbivores. Once fluconazole has been dosed, algae growth ceases, and then the algae progressively turn clear, lose structure and then disappear. Simultaneously multiple species of herbivores begin consuming the algae, as now it seem "palatable".

Very interesting stuff!!! There also appears to be no side effects to any higher order organisms in our reef aquaria!!!
Thank you

I have published a link to this thread at the Swedish forum. This drug is on prescription in Sweden, therefore not so easy to get. i have not read through the whole thread but has anyone test this in an aquraiun with sponges?

Sincerely Lasse

I am about to begin treatment and have sponges in my sump and a few in the dt. I'll make a point to pay attention to how they react.

I have a theory and no way to prove it but my gha went away to and I still have some bryopsis that's just stalks left. I wonder what I'm doing differently that other people aren't seeing gha going away?

Anyone with a toadstool?
Dosed 100mg tablet crushed into a 10g tank last night and my toadstool is closed today, everything else appears happy enough.
Algae appears a bit lighter in color. Dark greens are now lime green, some tips are even turning white, which is crazy I only dosed like 16 hours ago

Amazing tank! It's gonna work for you! I can't wait to see your after video!!! Mine was the same way, all embedded up inside all the crevices of my pukani. It hasn't been in my system for 2 weeks and there is 0 trace of any bryopsis anywhere. I was getting some in my filter socks for several days after it wasn't visible in the DT and I think it must have been growing in the plumbing. I haven't seen any in the last couple days so I am pretty sure that all of it is dead too.

Mine closed up a bit, but has been normal since!
