Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

So second question. How would I go about getting a prescription? I know there are other drugs out there that we use that for furry pets require a prescription. I don't have any other pets, do I need a vet?
You can get it through your vets. But I bought mine online without prescription, just Google fluconazole and there are plenty of vendors. Just don't tell them it's for a fish tank they won't sell it (just say you have thrush and used before) also there is a limit so may have to get from a few vendors.

I did

Hadn't heard of side-effects like this...not good.
My problem was a 6 hr power outage and not the meds. At least I don't believe so since mine was treated and completed weeks before. Due to the outage situation I don't feel like I can give a accurate after effect (so to speak) review. I'm not sure exactly what's going on in my system and don't thinks it is relevant to this thread.

@mcarroll
You asked about those who have treated their tanks 2,3 or more times with fluconazole...
One of the things we found was that low lit or shadowed areas took much longer to die if at all. Some people treated a second time adding light to those areas which worked for many. Others directed the meds to those locations with a turkey baster the 2nd time and it worked for some. Not all the systems have the same species of bryopsis (which are many) and others have gha which requires multiple treatments the majority of the time. GHA in general is much tougher to kill than the majority of bryopsis species. The very obvious bryopsis that looks like fern fronds dies the quickest and does not return. With others that left root behind it will return. From most of the posts where it returned they had not enough cuc and it grew back. Fluconazole alone (I agree with you) will not solve their initial problem, be it husbandry or not QT'ing frags that bring it into the system. I also believe that there are people calling it bryopsis when what they actually have is GHA. What do you think @NCreefguy , did I miss anything?

I agree and that's what I've said before. I think people just assume it's bryopsis but it's most likely GHA. Every single species of bryopsis that I can find info on has stated that it has the fern/fan type blades on it.This seems to be the common trait of all bryopsis species. I have yet to find anything different than that. When someone actually has bryopsis,Fluconazole works fairly quickly unlike having gha where it takes weeks sometimes and even more treatments.(If it even kills it at all)

Here is my before and after results using fluconazole. I thought the brown stuff was GHA (which it may have been) and I thought for sure that green stuff was bryopsis. However it didn't even put a dent on the green stuff. Either way, I'm still very pleased with the results of this treatment. Now on to treating the green stuff!

How are you going to treat the green stuff?

I may try vibrant. Any other suggestions?
H202. Test first. Put some in a cup with a little bit of tank water and add some hydrogen peroxide. In 24 hours if it doesn't look like it's turning white then it probably won't work. Vibrant takes a very very long time and can cause other issues in the process and it doesn't always work.

I'm about 9 days in after dosing 6 times the amount the algae is turning a bit wHite in color but not gone. Nitrates and phosphates are low the macroalgae might be absorbing the die off. But little fuzz or particles are around which I think is the die off of broypus seems to work

If the water doesn't look like it's turning white it will not work? Why is that

If h202 will be able to kill the algae, the algae (not tge water) will begin to fade in color to a white-ish color from the uptake of the h202.

Just wanted to update.

As some of you may remember, this is what my tank looked like the day of treatment Feb 13, 2017.

It took about a month to really see results, and no maintenance other than cleaning the glass was performed.

Here are a few pics from today :
