Just tore my tank down and cleaned everything. Did some cool rock scaping and started it back up. Also added a new calcium reactor, and reused about 50% of my old water. At first i had a dinoflagellates problem but resolved that fairly quickly using some Phosban. Thinking that was brought on since its going to take a few weeks for my Biopellet reactor to get back up to full strength. My phosphates are .02 using my Hanna checker. Alk and Calc are not perfect yet but the numbers are slowly rising. I have all my coral and fish in my 40 gallon tank for now while i get this tank back in check.

Then about 5 days ago i started getting Bryopsis (not sure the exact species of it) growing on the rocks, I have tried to raise my mag to 1500+ and killed the lights to the tank for about 3 days so far. I don't see it getting any worse, but i don't see a decline in the stuff that's in there. Any one got any ideas what i could do? Maybe how i could get an ID on the exact species on it so i could tailor the treatment?

Thanks everyone.

Raise you Mag to 1600. Then don3 day complete lights out. If you dont have any corals in the tank then just leave the lights off for a week, after raising the Mag to 1600.

Ugh, this stuff is stuff of nightmares. I lost the battle to this crap. I tried everything. It got so out of hand I was losing corals left and right. I eventually gave up. Took some time away from the hobby and have since restarted. I wish you all the best in getting this stuff under control.

Thanks, thats kinda the road that i was going with so far. What is going to stop it from returning once i have the lights back on. I read that some species of Bryopsis is not killed by high mag.

Rabbitfish may or may not. Crap shoot. Kent tech M may help. But it didn't work in my case. Perhaps a sea hare will help. But it's one of those do you kill it for the greater good type thing. Unless your LFS would take it. Even then, there's no guarantee it will it. IDK.

well i thought about trying the kent tech M if the BRS mag does not do it.. I'm not gonna give up, but i dont want to bleach the tank. Thank god all my corals and fish are in another tank and i dont see any of it in there. YET

The fauna Marin stuff is supposed to work on bryopsis... I would try that one before the kent... Just my 0.02 though.... Lost the battle a year ago and started from scratch ... Hadn't tried the fauna Marin stuff though

Ok, i will look into that stuff too.. Great suggestions guys. keep it comin.

Lettuce Sea Slug, and they're not hard to come by, Liveaquaria has them.

Afraid of this one since the tank is so large and been told they have a habit of getting sucked into your power-heads. Also there is no guarantee they will eat all of it if they even eat it.

Tech-M from Kent. I dosed kind of heavy about every three days. Within a week, the bry was brown & starting to flake away. Totally gone in three weeks or so. Your mileage may vary.

If it does come back, that means that there was some left in the tank when the treatment was discontinued. Its not a guarentee that it gets it all, but if you have no fish or coral in the tank, we have by far many more options. The lights out for over a week, total black out and Tech M is a pretty sure bet. There also using Hydrogen Peroxide.

Kent M is no guarantee either. I used 3 bottles worth. There are others that tried and had no impact. It depends on the species of bry. I suppose. Hydrogen Peroxide was working, but it will also kill other things on the rock. I was direct injecting at the base of some of the heavier stuff. It worked for a bit, but you could dose so much at any given time. By then it was just easier and more economical for me to give up.

It's extremely discourage to have. I really hope you beat the stuff.

I have heard that. I was told it was formulated for the "garden-variety" of bry. A bry outbreak is discouraging, though. I tried everything except for livestock. I can tell you from experience it does not work with the hair algae I had. I removed that rock and torched it (well, ok, I put it in the south-Texas sun for about a week). That DID work, lol.

Well since i just finished rock scapeing and bonding rocks together using the marco 400 stuff. Taking it out can be done, but I really really don't want to. This is a 240 gallon tank and that's a lot of rock work to remove. I think im going to order a gallon of the Kent Tech M, and try that path. I was reading that the fauna marin stuff requires you to remove your bio pellet reactor. So the Kent tech sounds like the safest option, if the BRS mag does not cut it in a few days.
