Bryopsis

Is using Kent Tech M to raise magnesium (and to what level?) still a good way to remove byropsis? It took me a little while to figure out what was growing and I think that's it (cant really get a good picture). It grows in little clumps and looks like a fern...some is green but some is more black. There appears to be some on all my rocks (not a whole lot) and I don't think removing the rocks and scrubbing is going to be an option with all my corals (and the main rock structure is HEAVY). I have 2 photon clowns, 1 McCosker, 1 watchman goby, 1 long spined urchin, 1 pink urchin, various snails and quite a bit of 'shrooms, zoas & LPS.

Any suggestions?

There have been recent reports that Tech M no longer works because of a change in the formulation. Do a search and see what you find for recent posts.

I'm not going to get all into it, been feeling like the grim reaper for this stuff lately. Gmay is correct, searching will help at the very least to inform you better on this weed. Here's a few links to help start you off.

If you can take the rocks out peroxide works fast with great results. If not, I usually suggest emerald crabs which do a great job. More specifically I think the red mithrax do a better job. Either way for them to work, you need about 1 for every 3 to 4g of tank volume.

Just keep them fed well. They are crabs and will eat anything they can get in their mouth, which is anything in your tank. I had one a few years back and we called him "Godzilla" because he was so big, @ 1.5".

Yeah...that's why I'm a little leery of crabs...I had some hermits that got HUGE and I'm pretty sure they started picking off fish before I got rid of them even though they were well fed.

did the Tech M work for you @Steve Maxwell ? I just ordered some for myself and I have an infestation before the levels needed to keep it at would be 1800 for 2 weeks but did it work for you?

I'm not sure about Steve but I went through a 64oz bottle and part of a 1 gallon of tech m. My bryopsis kept growing with no sign s of wilting after 3wks of use @ 1850 ppm. I stpped using the rest of the 1 gallon.

+1 on crabs, but agreed it's a gamble. Highly recommend peroxide. My bryopsis was limited on just a few new frags, but I pulled them, used a syringe to spot treat them with some peroxide and rinsed them in tank water before replacing in my display and it really did nuke the stuff.

Not yet...but I messed up the dosing and lost over a week of time I could have been treating. Yesterday was the first day I got over 1800, so I still have a long way to go. I really hope it works, because it has gotten much worse...it has attacked my main rock formation and keep spreading. If the Tech M doesn't work I guess I'll try H2O2 again...if that don't work I think I'm throwing in the towel.

I HATE THIS CRAP. It is just so ugly looking and takes everything over. I read somewhere that the Tech M had a hard time reaching above 1350 ppm but its good to know that you got your above it. I looked on amazon and people said the one I ordered was the variant that has the trace element in it so fingers crossed. Lets do some before and after shots and post them up here since others will look towards this forum in the future

I have before and after shots but with just tech m. I had to use H2O2 to knock it down. Of course peroxide is also only a band aid with bry. I've gone through rock removal and straight peroxide while letting the rock sit out of the water with it on for over 15min. Yes the leaf wilts, turns white and washes away to only return wks later due to the spore left in the crack of the rocks h2o2 did not penetrate. I'm on my 6th out of water h2o2 dose, why, cause it's killing my sps and atm not sure if I either want to quite, try new live rock and qt all my stuff or what? My will power is fading fast.

Atlantic nudi will eat bryopsis

Nudis will graze of the tops of the ferns. However they are way to slow, will disappear with time, and will not eradicate the bryopsis. I have tried myself.
