Even after a few days of fresh carbon? I just can seem to get past the crab being the culprit. I just seem to think it got so stressed it picked up an infection.
No, I’ve had bta’s that seem to have declined in a manner that looks very similar to yours. I would be highly doubtful the crab had anything to do with it. They aren’t abusive the way clowns can be. If you don’t figure it out, my experience is that they continue to shrink until they are gone. Even if they had been great for months previously. Again….maybe the nitrates?

Maroon clowns literally bite off the tentacles of their hosts (rude) and they manage.

Which leads me to believe the nem was already unhappy. Maybe any sort of extra stimulus just made the irritation more obvious.
The clown I have is a run of the mill clown. I never saw it nip at the nem but when it would try to get near, the nem wasn’t having it.

What I meant to say is a healthy nem doesn't die because a crab sat next to it. They can take a beating.

Nitrates got away from me and peaked at 40 I believe and I since have slowly brought them down. At high nitrates it was doin fine.

I get this, completely. It just seems really suspicious especially since the nem was on the uprise up until I added the crab. Since then……mad at the world. Literally over night.

Asuuming it’s not bullied, Its not as much the level of nutrients, but the change in levels, or the availability of them (starve).
They don’t like that at all.
They would need time to adjust to the new level.
Maybe overthinking this.
Go simple.
While you do need to stabilize nutrients, It looks totally stressed out, like it was bothered for some time.

That’s what I’m suggesting, raise the nitrates and see if it improves.

I hear the water quality alarms….but, would a tuxedo urchin be like the canary in a mine when it comes to water quality? Mines been truckin just fine through all this.

Not every organism likes the same water conditions. Just because some livestock is good, doesn’t mean there isn’t something another organism won’t like. Copper would be a good example. Dump in a bunch of copper and say that can’t be why my inverts are dead because the fish are totally fine.

The only level really that had to be reeled in was the nitrates and through the denitrifer I’m experimenting with, it brought them down by about a lil under 2ppm per day.

Ok, if you don’t want advice, why’d you ask for it. Apparently you know it was the crab. Cool. Good luck with that.

Agreed. Just figured an urchin is good indicator of water being ok from posts that I’ve read.

Lol, Slow down champ, I hadn’t seen this post yet.

Not to be condescending but I’m trying to slowly lower n03 to about 5-10. That’s pretty much where they were at when I first added the nem, then they got away from me. I started lowering the nitrates to the point where I could add the crab then fastfoward to now. The nem was growing and thriving for 6 months prior. I don’t know how else to describe the timeline.

I don’t think that’s the cause but maybe a contributor.
They seem to quite sensitive to changes.
At 2ppm per day, that’s 20ppm in 10 days.
That’s half of your high.
There’s little you can do but keep his environment stable.
Maybe the clown beat him up.

It’s pretty close to my target and I’ll leave it be. The nem never opened its mouth or expelled anything. It looks bothered more than anything. I’ve got some brightwell aminos on hand. Do you suggest I add a drop? Total volume is 12 gallons.

edit: the clown would bug it by trying to be hosted from time to time but the nem would always close up at any attempt and the clown would give up for a few days and let the nem be. The nem would open back up and the process would repeat every once in a while.

I’d not feed that in any way.

Stabilize environment, run tank normally with new nitrate level.

Ensure phosphate remains to the band as well.

Im not a supporter of any meds, seen more things killed by using meds than saved.

Perfect. I’ll let it be. P04 has been pretty good at between .05-.07 for months. Thanks!

FWIW: 6 days of .6ml of the cipro solution I made didn’t kill anything. Just my hopes of a healed nem.

I recently (a few weeks ago) purchased a porcelain crab for my anemone thinking the anemone would host it. I’ve had a clown fish for almost 2 years and always wanted an anemone for it. In March I Got lucky and a wonderful opportunity presented itself to me. Acclimated the BTA and all was goin good until my clown started showing interest. Every time the clown tried to love on the anemone it would close up for a bit then open back up when “the coast was clear” this would happen periodically over the course of a couple of weeks. Long story short….my anemone apparently is a diva and refuses to host anything and would much rather die I guess. The crab also tried to love it and now the anemone just refuses to cooperate and open up. Got home one day and it wasn’t opened up to its normal glory. This went on for about a week and I decided to rehome the crab to my sons tank Thinking that the BTA would eventually figure out that his nemesis was gone and open back up. Nope. After doing some research I decide on doing a full in tank cipro treatment (thinking it had some sort of stressed induced infection) after he started to look like this and let go of his foothold of where he’d been for a few months and was on the sand bed. By the end of the day he was reattached to the rock work and has moved back close to his original spot but remains partially opened. I have not noticed a gapping mouth so I am at a loss. 3DBD0FC8-3CFD-46E7-817E-78D311AF0AFD.jpeg

Based on what I read on some other folk doin in tank treatments, I went by their suggestions:

1- 500mg pill crushed and diluted into 50ml of RODI. I dosed my tank based on the suggested dosing strength for 6 days (.6ml of solution for 12 gallons of volume) nightly at lights off. Yesterday was my last dosing day but my anemone hasn’t improved or gotten worse. Here is a shot of him this morning. D834EF27-1A8E-45D9-9A20-FEB704FE6937.jpeg

tank parameters are as follows.

alk 9.8
Nitrate 11.5
Phos .07
Salinity 34
Calcium 447
Temp 78

I haven’t really tested mag but based on how stable my calcium has been I imagine that mag is good too (I dose all for reef).

I hope y’all can help me get this guy back to his previous glorious self.
I believe dosing cipro in-tank can kill off beneficial bacteria that exists in a mature tank. Highly recommend treating in QT. @OrionN is the nem treatment expert I look to as he’s successfully treated many nems (although typically carpets).

This thread is what inspired me to give it a shot. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/e...ic-treatments-for-brown-jelly-disease.782438/
He found that only a minuscule of good bac was affected. I’m done with the treatment period and no change occurred. My parameters didn’t seem to be affected either. They suggested a dose of MB7 after so I can if need be since I’ve got some of that on hand as well.
