Hello everyone! I’m currently making a custom 226 galling tank with a 36 gallon sump, I’ve been in the market for a great skimmer for this build but wasn’t sure what to go with, I’ve been told to get a bubble king but not sure which one to go for since I’ve heard that I shouldn’t get one that’s rated for my size tank , to go a step down or if just getting an octo is better? Please help !

Have had bubble king but now have a Life Reef on my new 180. IMO it was a better choice in that it is basically plug and play, extremely well made, less money than a Bubble King, and is hand made so can be customized to fit your needs including choice of pump. The drawback is that you have to get in line as there is very high demand.

It’s gonna be about two months before I get my new tank so a wait is fine, how is the performance compared to the bubble king ?

You have lots of options, but you have a big tank and a small sump, what are the dimension of the sump that you can work with?

I love my Bubble King. That isn’t to say others don’t work as well or better. I’m not here to comment on that, but what I will contribute could be of help to you IF you choose a BK.
DONT oversize this brand. I have a 240 gallon tank with 20-25 fish and feed it 3-5 times a day. I run a BK double cone 200 (rated for 150 w/heavy load and 264 w/a light load [per BRS website]) and this skimmer has no issues keeping up with the fish load and feeding. Sleif on RC is a rep for them so maybe ask him what he thinks. But I would suggest a Double Cone 200 or maybe a Supermarin 200. But you won’t need one much bigger.

From what I’ve been hearing it’s a great way to go for sure, I just want to be positive that it’s worth the money before doing so, obviously they aren’t in anyway cheap but I’m willing to spend the money if it’s what’s gonna keep the tank as clean as possible and skimming the best, just never met anyone who had one so wanted to see what others who do that have also used other skimmers thought

Life Reef. There are several threads where they are discussed and you will find similar comments
Ok I was just looking at there website (not the best sight ever) but I’ve read that the owner is very hard to deal with and that’s a little concerning, how was your experience?

Jeff? He has always been very responsive and helpful to me.

Hi,
according to many, this is the best brand ever! In order to size it: do you have a roller fleece or not?
- if no: take their sizing as correct
- if yes divide their sizing by half (info received directly from them)

regarding the model:
- deluxe is the top in terms of parameter options: you can adjust whatever you want.
- supermarin (their standard) is the must have. Solid performance, easy to use
- double cone: Price accessible option. Less quality, but lower price (still better quality than most of other brands IMO). This is not hand manufactured as the other 2.
- mini: small size, BBK quality (also not hand made)

i hope it helps
(sorry for the english, I’m not a native speaker)

Actually, I find him very easy to deal with. One of the very few vendors who will discuss things over the phone to make sure you get exactly what you want and need.

16.25 x 14.5
It’s a crystal reef stealth 36
I am sorry, my bad, your sump should be fine, I have a 44" sump from Fiji and I have found that lots of larger skimmers do not fit or are very tight, I bought it for my in the garage, dry 72" x 30' x 24" tank.

How much height do you have for the skimmer?
