What's going on here? Tank is about 6 weeks old. Params look good. This was dry rock originally, introduced live and dry rock when cycle started.

Your hitting the uglies of the new tank cycle. It's the norm. As long as you can keep your parameters in check it will go away on its own.

That makes me feel better. Hopefully more good stuff grows and kills off more bad stuff this week.

Those are all good guys – don't do anything to interfere. :) Make sure you aren't using anything like carbon dosing or GFO right now. If you are, pull it. No nutrient reducers. :)

Glad i saw that. I was going to add gfo this week.

I have been scraping the glass but that's a given.

If you can stand it I wouldn't even scrape the glass during this phase....just watch the tank, see what grows where and for how long and try to absorb everything that's happening.

Lots of things will come and go...and some will come back!

Some never leave, they just don't continue visibly blooming.....becoming one of the MANY invisible members of your tank's microbial loop. ;)

Take notes on all changes you notice – keep a diary!!

When you add livestock, add it slowly, 1-2 critters at a time....starting with the smallest first. CUC....1-2 snails. Always wait at least a few weeks before adding more livestock. Next I'd either add a coral or 1-2 more CUC and wait another month or two. Then another small addition to the tank and another big wait. I'm sure you get the picture I'm painting. ;)

Be there, take notes, take your time. It's very hard to go wrong if you're paying attention at that level AND taking your time at that level.

So 2 days later its looking like this. Still normal?

Looks kinda stringy and gross.

Most algae looks stingy or slimy and gross. :D (Wait till your protein skimmer starts kicking in for real gross-ness! ;))

As long as you're not in the process of purposefully starving your tank (are you? it's surprisingly popular), the algae growing is almost surely a good thing no matter how it looks.

Cyano gets a bad rap, but it's a key player as it brings nitrogen into the system (from the air) exactly where it's needed.

If it starts taking over, then something else is going on....but that doesn't happen during the Uglies™ phase.

Keep all your moves small and move slowly in between moves, and everything will work out fine. :)

I'm cutting the lights while I'm on vacation. 5 days.

I don't trust anyone else to handle my tank anyway.
