Build thread: Red Sea Reefer 250

I like the Tunze. It's quiet and the controller is simple to use. I have not hooked it up to the Apex and now I don't see a real reason to. I tried the Nero too briefly and returned it. In hindsight, I think if the magnet issue was resolved, I would go with the Nero because of its smaller size.

Did the Nero 5 ever actually come loose from the glass on your Reefer 250? I have the same tank and never had an issue.

Thank you. Forgot the GFCI outlet. I went back and forth about installing it myself after researching via youtube and ended up installing it myself. There were 2 cables in the outlet and I ended up finding out which was the live wire by mistake, with my finger! Also figured out how to straighten the doors via the hinges.
How did you get the doors straight?

No it did not, but I only ran it for a few minutes. But I couldn't aim it as well as the Tunze because it wasn't secured as tightly. The magnet on the Tunze is super strong.

The instructions don't tell you (or at least I didn''t notice), but you can remove a metal cover over the hinge part that is attached to your stand. Under the cover are a couple of screws that move the hinge in various ways. I can't tell you which screw does what but you can experiment/google.

Thanx, after fooling around I found it!

So hitting the 6 month mark now. Lots of coraline algae. Things are going well. Put in my first corals a couple of weeks ago: hammer, fruit loops zoas, and purple people eater palys (I'm a Vikings fan). Then I added a couple of red/orange mushrooms and another paly that the guy at the reef shop forgot the name of (they have peachy orangish circles on the disc). Not really sure where I should be putting these things so it's trial and error. I did put the hammer in the corner as I know they send out stingers at night.

For fish, I have the 2 gladiator clowns, 1 is still a jerk so I might return her. A coral beauty that I am keeping a close eye on. Hasn't pecked at a coral yet. And the gramma. Lost 2 blennies (a midas and then a tailspot) that just disappeared. I'm guessing they jumped and the cat ate them.

I added some diffusers from 3D reefing. Pretty slick, though there still is shimmer on the bottom.

I have yet to do a water change, but will do so this week. The fine sand I have blows around too much (I have the tunze and nero on low), so plan on removing it and adding coarser sand. Plan is to remove about 20% per water change so the filtration doesn't change too much.

That's the news from Boston.

I reordered the Nero as I like the smaller profile and to compare with the Tunze. I'm having trouble with it staying on the network. A few times it's been stopped with a flashing red light. I cannot complete the setup process now. It does work if I unplug it and plug it back in. Support sent me a fix I will try tonight.

IIRC, the latest firmware is 1.0.2.
Support just emailed saying they are sending out a new controller for the Nero. Maybe there's a controller issue with the first Neros.

Question for you . My buddy is building a 250 and has not received it yet .Can you measure the inside width from the sump outside glass to the inside stand wall . Trying to see how much room he has for equipment on the right side .

I've got 13 inches between the sump and the wall. I have about an inch on the other side, so if I slid the sump against the left side of the stand it would be 14 inches.

The tank looks great Gary and welcome to R2R!
