Bulk Reef supply prices

The smaller guys probably sell less volume and are working on past prices once they run out and order more I am sure they will start going up like everything else right now…

Cup of noodles used to cost ten cents then 20 then 25 now 40-50. Could all this rise be from a weakening dollar or currency?

Bingo! the US dollar is on its way out. I say give it 5-10 years tops and it will no longer be the world reserve currency. inflation is real People currencies all over the world are falling apart the all mighty dollar is not above the reset.

IMHO invest for $$ in real estate and Bitcoin. no need to keep large amounts of cash in a bank make your money work for you, even if its just a few hundred or thousand.

Yes everthing is up!
I used ESV salt for 5 years and just went back to IO.
While ESV is great it cost $70 per 100 gal. I got 2 buckets of IO for $75 which is 320 g's.
My systems do not know the difference.
Even though I can afford the ESV I just could not see paying for it.
Ans since everything else is going up I can buy more with the salt savings, lol

where did you get your buckets of IO? I need to stock back up.

I got my last bucket at Petco. It was like $28 for the 160g bucket after their 25% coupon. Had to be ordered online but picked up in store.

I mix IO and TM Pro Reef. Or at least that's the plan for the new build. A 50/50 blend will drastically lower costs and give me better parameters

Milk, gas, Tropic Marin pro salt, homes, lumber, electronics (specifically chips), even shipping containers (which have increased ten-fold).

Prices are going up across the board for reasons they teach in high school: supply and demand.

For supply, it’s disruption and component availability thanks to coronavirus manufacturing and shipping delays.

Demand is going up as a result of supply issues and so stuff is sold fast when supply is available and at higher prices to offset cost increases along the way.

In OP example, BRS is on record saying this was going to happen just due to shipping costs alone.

Everything has gone up! Anyone who doesn’t notice is turning the blind eye for some reason. Example. AI32 light was $366 on BRS a couple months ago, now $399.
AI/maxspext actually raised their prices that wasn't brs. I say is cause all the problems with freight just alot more expensive to get products that come fro. Overseas

This @dank reefer post really shows it all.

BRS bought Marine Depot out because they were BRS’s biggest competitor and BRS wants to monopolize as much market share as they can. It’s not about shipping charges, they have already passed that to us by raising the free shipping amount to $49. They are simply greed driven and you are completely blind if you do not see it for what it is. I attempt to use any other source possible when I buy reef maintenance products. If it’s not clear, I really dislike BRS’s business practices.

Actually, this makes me wonder... could you mix RODI with kalkwasser to the correct dKH, then add food-grade table salt to the correct salinity, then dump in some magnesium and trace elements and call it good? That might be cheaper than a full bucket of salt.

That's basically what ESV B-Ionic does, right?

(Also, don't buy Bitcoin right now it's way too high and is semi-traceable; get on zCash before it's hot... of course, I said the same thing about Scolymia and they're the same price they were last year while acros/zoas are through the roof, so maybe don't trust me for investment advice)

For those thinking inflation is due to overseas shipping. AI is engineered and assembled in Ames, Iowa, USA
Maybe it cost them more to ship a giant box full of LED’s and microchips from China?

States can collect now even if the business is not from your state. Even eBay collects sales tax now in certain states.

Yes, I'm well aware of that. On the other hand, there are at least 6-8 marine online sites that don't charge tax. I know eventually this will come to an end but for now it's something still to take advantage of.

Another option is to buy direct from the manufacturer if they offer that option. The price is the same & you avoid the middle man and also the tax.

The only time I buy from a site that charges tax is when the sale overcomes that. For example the Marine Depot close out sale which charged sales tax when they never had before BRS bought them out.:)

As a general comment about high prices........there are plenty of fair deals if one avoids a lot of the hype and marketing ploys. This is especially true in the tech, chemical and biological areas.

Even certain fish sites like Divers Den, have become ridiculous with the fish prices. On top of that they add on box charges and tax. There are various other online options for conditioned fish that don't try to abuse buyers.

Went to restock on the same salt two weeks ago and noped right out of that $106 + tax cart. Even amazon was $10 cheaper when I checked. Called around to my LFS's and found one selling the same 200gal sack for $74.99. Sure I had spend 30min driving round trip after work one day, but I'd say the $20-30 saved was worth it.

As others have said, shop and call around before paying ridiculous prices for the convenience.

Also if you're cool with Instant Ocean Reef Crystals instead, Petco (purchase online for in store pick up) and Chewy both had all IO on sale cheap this week. I grabbed a 160gal bucket of IO original for $37 from Petco for my QT tank.

There is absolutely no reason to pay 107 dollars for a 200 gallon mix of salt. I can't believe people are paying that.

Once I/O approached $60 and Fritz RPM went down towards $60 then all of a sudden cleaning that brown crud wasn’t worth it…45 years of brand loyalty down the tubes…
Consumers have some leverage still

Who pays $60 for IO?
