Buying corals on E-Bay

Thanks everyone, i am sold! Changed my mind about uying from ebay
I will receive my first coral (orange plate) from ebay tomorrow

btw and fyi: The reason that ebay went to an all private bidder scheme is because sites like toolhaus showed conclusively that TONS of shill bidding was going on. Rather then address the shill bidding, which is against the rules and might actually be illegal, Ebay chose to simply hide the identities of bidders from tools that exposed the shill bidding. Ebay makes more off shills anyway since they run up auction prices so heck no they don't want to stop shill bidding! Some categories, like coins, are almost 100% shills (especially with the larger bidders).

Bidder names are never visible, except to the seller. This is not something that the seller has any control over, Ebay hides the names.

The only reason anyone loses an auction is because they didn't bid high enough, to begin with, and were outbid. There are two common trains of thought, as to how best to bid.

1. Use a sniping program, or manually snipe, by bidding in the last few seconds of the auction. This can still result in a lost auction if someone else has previously set a proxy bid equal to or higher than your bid. Tie bids go to the person who entered that amount the earliest, whether that amount shows up or not. Setting a proxy bid will not always result in you paying that amount. The amount you end up paying will be determined by the second highest bid + the next bid incriment.

2. Bid once, at any time during the auction, then forget the auction. Bid the highest amount you are willing to pay. You can bid this amount early, mid auction or later in the auction...it doesn't matter. The reason it doesn't matter is because you've bid the highest amount you're willing to pay. If you get outbid, someone else was willing to pay more than you felt the item was worth so you shouldn't be disappointed. If you win, you pay an amount equal to the second highest bidder + the next bid incriment. As an example, you see an item you really like, near the beginning of the auction...you feel that the item is worth $12.00. You bid $12.00. At the time, the bid amount may only show as $1.99 so your $12.00 bid raises the current bid by the incriment amount (say .50) to $2.49. You completely ignore the auction until you receive an email saying you've won or lost. If you win, you will win the item for an amount of $12.00 OR LESS! If you lose, someone else felt the item was worth more than $12.00.

The easiest way to get frustrated is to get into a bidding war. Avoid bidding wars at all cost!

exactly why I said to be careful. happens more than most know

eBay is like any other establishment....buyer beware. You have to do your research on the items being sold as well as the sellers. Ask questions, if you don't like the answers or something feels wrong, don't bid. eBay is a business, they are out to make money, so you will pay fees and you may have to deal with customer service.

I have not purchased or sold any corals on eBay, but since joining eBay in 1998 I have bought and sold thousands of other items (from junk and car parts to high end camera equipment). You are going to run into your share of low lifes, but you will also deal with folks that will go out of their way to make sure you have a good transaction.

From my understanding they went to private bidding because other sellers would contact potential buyers of a product and offer their product at a lower price and sell outside of eBay. For example, if I had a known coral such as Rastas zoas posted and people were bidding on it. Another vendor could contact the bidder and offer the same coral to them, since the vendor already knows they are interested. By sellers doing such things it would stop the bidder from bidding more and that bidder would the. Purchase the coral outside if eBay. The simple solution was for eBay to block the bidders ID and prevent sales outside of eBay and prevent bidders being harassed by other sellers.
This was a big problem a couple years back and I'm glad to see that eBay created an easy fix.

Ha! If you believe that, I've got some wonderful beachfront property in Kansas for sale..... While I am sure that is a benefit of hiding all bidders, there is no possible way I believe this is the reason they changed. They changed very shortly after toolhaus started becoming big. Not only does ebay not care AT ALL about shill bidders, they encourage it. Of course, don't get caught, "officially" you can't do it.

I've never bought live coral from Ebay, but I have been looking at some nice blue mushrooms at an awesome price. I did buy a lot of other stuff from ebay though, and I usually look for "buy it now" as I'm to lazy to fight other bidders. Got my T5 lamp from there, very cheap. Just replaced the bulbs with T5s.

Shill or not, it still comes down to bid the maximum YOU are willing to pay. If they shill the price higher then you wanted to pay, they do you a favor. Don't be frustrated you don't get the deal of the century because other folks bid on an auction and made it go for a reasonable price.

For every no limits auction someone wins for $.99, there's a sad seller that got rooked out of a reasonable sale price. The market drives the price, so bid what you're willing to pay, and be happy if you win.

I don't have an ebay account. so bidding isn't for me

I would rather just buy it than wait for a time to be up

It's true you do need to be careful on eBay down to the LFS. I've had sponsors get from forums but not all eBay sellers are bad. Here I n the Northwest there's a eBay seller (Golden Basket) that for the past year has been outstanding in every way. And I know for fact that even some sponsors here purchase from them because its coming straight in off the plane from over seas so there's diamonds everyday IF you know what your looking for.
But you have to make the choice for yourself what your going to doin the long run

Yeah, that's what I believe. I've been selling in eBay for many years and communicate with others that sell other items on eBay other than coral. I surf the net constantly about eBay and other sales and never heard of toolhaus not one time. Some, I'm not sure how big toolhaus is to never have heard of it throughout the years to the point that eBay would be encouraged to change their policy. It took eBay several years to change their policy to comply with the IRS which leads me to believe that toolhaus would not be enough encouragement for them to change to private bidding.

I just thought u would take a look at toolhaus, I did and its completely unreliable. I put in my user name and it shows I don't exist. I put in my username for a feedback check and toolhaus states that eBay has blocked toolhaus and they apologize that the information is unavailable. Again, I don't think eBay changed their site due to a unreliable site such as toolhaus that does not work.

Nowadays I do notice people driving up bids for the seller. I know because I have created a personal relationship with them throughout there ventures on eBay I actually know vendors on eBay who have told me they have their pals bid on stuff to drive the price up. FYI it is a known fact, and I'm telling you now because my old college buddy's friend from home "goldenbasket8" has had his personal friends bid against people like Mike from sexy corals during the times when Mike was bidding on chalices and other LPS. I do recall a time before the acquisition of the now famous chalice "SC Sexy Super Women" was on eBay. I was watching this spectacular bidding contest unfold with my buddy in our dorms (someone goldenbasket8 knows whom will stay anonymous) bid against Mike until the very last minute when the bidder, in this case Mike put up 1600.00 for it. Then he was told to stop. This all occurred via a messaging system they have in place.

Remember not all vendors practice this method. I just wanted to put the APB out there. Don't get scammed by these people. They have systems in place to make a thousand times more than actually acquired for.

Yes they have beautiful corals and yes they provide great service and outrageously over priced corals but it is a buyer beware game that is being played. I have very close ties with the wholesale community because of my father and his pals have been providing retailers with hundred of tons of corals for over 15 years. And remember this. Wholesale prices are very fairly cheap. I know because I used to work for reefermadness at the time. Corals nowadays retail corals are just too overpriced according to my dad and his buddies. But hey like I said buyer beware market....good luck folks....

I have bought from several people from eBay and only once did I feel cheated. other than that I love paying big bucks when it comes to getting one of a kind pieces
:)
