What corals do you have currently?

Euphyllia, duncans etc, lots of lps they have grown just fine and will do the job if you slowly up your whites you can get some nice color, my elegance was only 6” when i first purchased through aqua sd 4 months ago now it is around 12” + i had to raise it from the sand bed to give room for other corals

I actually have some sps, montis have grown nicely when placed med to high in the tank, i did hve a couple acros that were coloring up but i made the mistake of lowering the light to just 3” off the surface to give more light to them and it eas to quick bleached them all, lesson learned

Currently everyone is at the bottom on a frag rack.

IMHO you will find you’ll have plenty of success without T5 supplement with your current set up and lights especially with what is stocked with and you could do sps just play with placement of the corals some will do better higher in the tank with stronger par and some will do better lower in the water column with less light do your homework and learn the requirements or placement of any SPS

I have a canopy so i mounted it onto that.

My Whites are at 50, I see yours are at 30, is 50 to high?

Right now everything is open, except the toadstool... which is unfortunate given what a closed toadstool looks like, in a house full of boys it has a new nickname.

Also my Sonic opens at night in the moon light setting but not during the day with the whites.

How long have you had your lights and corals? Sometime its just time as they need time to acclimate, and sorry that was a typo my whites are at 50

Lol i remember when i got my first corals only differrncr is i did not have those lights i had some cheap ones as i was only planning a FOWLR how quick my mind changed when i walked into WWC lol, your corals are still new they will adjust, make sure all of your parameters are where they need to be and remain consistent,

Nitrate 2-10ppm
Phos 0-0.5 ( i say that but my phos stays at 1 with no issues )

I say all of that but i will tell you don't chase numbers once your tank looks happy just keep it where it is at i had alot of bad avice where people trying to tell that my numbers have to exact and lost alot of corals, then a real good sales guy from wwc told no one tank is the same don't chase numbers

Agreed. That was my thought with lights, try to find a good spot where everyone is happy...

This picture is from their website. I have the Orbit Marine on the rim of my 29 gallon tank. I've had it for over a year and a half now and it seems to be doing well with what I have. I originally had only a GSP and some random zoa but a few months ago added an additional zoa, a mushroom, and a Kenya tree. All are growing very well. (I think, anyway. They're definitely growing, though.) All corals are in the middle third of the tank so about 6-12 inches below the surface.

My daytime light is 100 red, 100 green, 100 blue, and 90 white.
Morning and evening is 16 red, 16 green, 16 blue, and 15 white.
Nighttime is 0 red, 0 green, 10 blue, and 0 white.

I'll upload some pictures later of what the tank looks like in the different settings.

I had 4 T5 lights on my first coral tank as my primary along with orbit marine pro as a supplement as I found initially that the orbit pro was not strong enough for my lps and sps that I added . I eventually swapped out both for 2 165 w. Viper spectras and then I had a ton of growth.

I currently have the orbit marine pro on my 90 Malawi cichlid tank which works great for showing off there color ..

Here’s an update on my tank. My ramp up/down is just the preprogrammed settings, moonlight is as well. My day time settings are 100-blue 50-white 25-red/green. I have softies(Xenias, toadstool, zoas, etc.) and LPS(Duncan, torch, hammer). So far everything is doing good. Good color, opening all the way, appearing healthy. However, I have had no growth. The zoas and Xenia have been in the tank a couple months and look great, but haven’t grown at all. So I bought so T5s to supplement. We will see.

I have the ORBIT MARINE IC PRO DUAL LED plus the accessory lights for a total of 4 24inch lights.

I leave everything at 100% except for the white. They are at 35%.

No additional lighting on the main.

Excellent results.

Okay... maybe this is a dumb question... maybe I just don’t get how lights work... but if these lights are not the most powerful why not just turn all colors up to 100%?

The lighting demands of a Reef Tank are far greater than that of a Fish Only With Live Rock setup. So when choosing a light for your reef tank, consider the following:

• Light Spread. When we speak of light spread, we are speaking of the area which a light covers.

An easy way to demonstrate light spread would be to take a flashlight, turn it on and stand it on end with the light facing down on a table. Now, slowly pick it straight up, moving away from the table. Notice that as you move the flashlight further from the table, the area of the table covered by light increases. The growing and shrinking of the area covered by light on the table based on the distance from the table is the spread.
So when selecting a light, the spread must cover the footprint of the tank. And much in the same way you adjusted the spread of light on the table top by changing the distance of the light from the table, you can adjust the spread of your light by changing the height at which the light hangs over the aquarium. But there is more…

• Light Intensity. It isn’t enough that your light spread covers the entire footprint of your tank. It must do so with the proper light intensity as well.

When speaking of light and it’s intensity in aquariums, people will reference light measurements in “lumen” or “PAR”. What is the difference between PAR and Lumen? Generally, lumen are used to measure the brightness of light as perceived by the human eye.
PAR is the amount of light that is actually available to be used during the photosynthesis process. So when speaking in terms of PAR, we are speaking about the portions of the light spectrum usable by the inhabitants in the tank.

I have the 2 ic pro lights over my 45 gallon. They are sitting on the rim of the tank. The tank dimensions are 36”wide-12”long-24”tall.
These just don’t seem strong enough for a 2 foot deep tank, and since the tank only goes back 12 inches, I don’t have room to add t5s. I only have gsp right now, but I hope to have several lps, sps, and a clam, so I’m thinking about looking for a Black Friday deal on some of the hydra 26 or 52.
