Well, I feel like one of the most useless individuals on the planet right now. I have had some issues, as most of us have in getting started, as my tank is only been up since Sept 2014. Lost my Magnificent, which my LFS was never able to help me understand why or what happened earlier this year, but kept my chin up, and got back on track with successfully adding a Atlantic Blue, a Yellow and Chocolate Tang, and 3 Disbar Anthias to my already existing happy family of 2 carpenter wrasse, a midas blenny with a TON of charachter, and a cardinal. I was also able to start keeping some really nice Acro frags, about 20 of them when I upgraded to an 8 bulb ATI fixture, with which I could not be more happy with!

Fast forward to last Friday, I leave with my wife and daughter to Indy for a soccer tourney, oh by the way I acclimated 4 more REALLY NICE frags from the live sale @CherryCorals who worked with me on some DOA issues right before I left, and left my house, dogs, and tankmates to my sister in law for the weekend. We had some storms roll through, and as of Saturday, things seem to be fine. I get a call Sunday morning, right before the girls championship soccer game, and she is histerical and crying because she sees a bunch of dead fish, the lights were not on, and the pumps were not working. SO, as it turns out sometime between 12 on Sat and 12 on Sun, the power had went out, which cost me 7 of my 10 fish, and ALL of my acro frags which are ghost white! She was unable to be of much help, so after getting home later Sunday, I did a 30g water change after removing all the fish, and changed out the carbon and filter pads/socks. IT GETS BETTER, as she mentioned there was water on the floor, and in the midst of being unbelievably aggravated and distraught, it did not dawn on me as to how there was water on my floor. Welp, I found out what that was, as my sump has a leak, and is managing to place nice puddles of water on my floor as we speak! My LFS friend is trying to rework his schedule to come help me change out my sump later today (I hope it makes it that long) as I continue to think how great things are for me and this hobby right now.

Whats really frustrating personally is I got a batter backup for xmas that I have manged to let sit in a box and not hook up as of yet! Anyway, as I have vented WAY longer than I planned, I guess the good news was the girls won their division in Indy, but I have lost some GREAT tank mates that I feel AWFUL about, as well as a ton of really great Acros, so I am unsure how much longer I will be continuing in the hobby that I had so much hope for, not to mention a TON OF MONEY invested in!:(

Sorry for your lost. What a tragedy it has to happen when your not home. You can get an air pump from i think petco with battery that goes on when power is out. When you rebuild, it will be better. We live and learn from what life has in store for us.

Yams feel for you bro. Good luck with everything keep us posted. If ya need some donations for anything I'm sure some of us are willing to help. I currently unemployed but 10 bucks here and there adds up. So send me your PayPal. Good luck.

I am so sorry. I can commiserate with the leaking tank and losing livestock and corals.

I don't really have great advice outside of letting things cool in your head a bit before making any decisions. I wanted to give it all up more than once in this hobby.

Thank you for your post. As tragic as it my seem right now, your post remind us all how important it is to have a back up power plan. 6 months from now this will all be history and I look forward to the rebuild post.:)

So sorry! Really stinks :-( i did the same with my overflow. Bought it to prevent an overflow in event of a power loss. Left it in the box for months. The day after i finally installed it.. you guessed it. Power loss. Would have been a disaster in my 2nd floor apt. I got soooo lucky. I hope you dont give up. Learned lessons. I lost my whole tank twice. But i now have a beautiful thriving reef. Until the next lesson. Lol

An unfortunate part of this hobby and I'm really sorry you're going through this. Best of luck getting the sump repaired/replaced. Stick with this hobby because I think deep down you have a passion for it, or you wouldn't have posted this nor used terms like "GREAT tank mates" or that you feel "AWFUL" about this. Shows you care in my opinion. Ride the storm, learn from the "issues", and all will work out.

On the bright side, and to lighten things up, the Blues are still in the playoffs!!!

I am sorry to hear about your losses. I know the feeling as over many years and many different aquariums I have left for a few days only to come back to a disaster. Its never easy to recover from. Best thing to do is take advantage of some of the technology avaiable to monitor the aquarium. While it can't prevent another disaster it can provide a warning.

I'm so sorry about this. It's simply unfair that these things happen when you're not around. I don't blame you for wanting to quit, but take a big breath and wait till you've had a chance to decompress. I had a tank crash a few years ago due to a broken ac (holiday weekend of course) and the house was 90 degrees inside for 3 days. I lost all my coral and battled cyano for several months after that. I finally took a big breath, broke everything down and started over. Now the tank is fine. Hang in there, and know you're in good company who are here to help you out.

OH my...This is hard to digest. I can't do much for you but I will cry with you as we share the same passion. We reefers are under the same risk....I hope we learn from your loss. Do you have something that will tell you if the power is out? I have UPS and an apex that sends email to me if the power is out for 10 minutes. The leak is another issue that I am praying everyday for that not to happen....

I hope you recover from this loss and continue keeping your chin up!

Yikes!!! I had something similar years ago when I came home to a leaking 150, not fun. I feel your pain. This hobby is unforgiving and everyone's biggest fear is power failure when not at home.

Hang in there.

That stinks! I hope you can get the sump swapped out soon!
LOL, I am on my way home and only hope I don't walk into a pool of water on the floor!

Yeah, I have the battery back up already, which will be getting connected and set up THIS WEEKEND!

Yams feel for you bro. Good luck with everything keep us posted. If ya need some donations for anything I'm sure some of us are willing to help. I currently unemployed but 10 bucks here and there adds up. So send me your PayPal. Good luck.
THANK YOU! What an amazing gesture, and I am in no way taking anything from anyone, as this is part of the process we ALL go through in one way or another. I really appreciate your thoughts and offer. Thanks bro!

It's happened to all of us at one point or another my friend.
Best of luck with everything!
TY

Yeah, it really sucks and it is really bothering me, but I guess I will pick up the pieces and move on.

I don't really have great advice outside of letting things cool in your head a bit before making any decisions. I wanted to give it all up more than once in this hobby.
TY. I am going to do what I can to keep level headed moving forward.

**** that is terrible. Thanks for sharing your story though. Ill grab a battery back up ASAP. At the very least your story can help others learn from your mistakes.
TY, and good idea, as I can't believe I actually have one sitting in a box that has been there since DECEMBER! grrrrrr..

Wow, thats a painful ordeal you just went through. I serviced tanks for a number of years and an ice storm that knocked out power and impacted some of our customer's tanks taught me about battery back ups. I always run one now and change out fresh batteries once a year. Cheap insurance.

Yep I've always been afraid to buy a glass tank for the risk of: cracks, seam separation, falling rocks, just random leaking.. Disadvantages of acrylic is they scratch soooo easily and are difficult to keep clean for this reason. If I had a sump you could bet it would most certainly be a plastic tupperware or else an acrylic tank.

Your story is crushing and heartbreaking all at the same time. A lot of folks have suffered major setback at one point or another. I know that doesn't help you right now , but keep your chin up, learn from it . Take your time , take a break. Breath. Get your feet back under you and step ahead.

I look forward to seeing you rise from the proverbial ashes!

You are a reefer and will always be, comeback with a vengeance and determination!

Here is the fruit of our labor over the last 6+ hours. At least the sump doesn't leak anymore. Lol!

Looking good and I'm glad you got it swapped out without further damage.
