Cant keep up Alkalinity

I will defenitely look into mixing on my own. Is the flask and stirrer necessary or would it be sufficient to stirr thoroughly by hand?
You can stir by hand personally I think most of us spend $10 and a cheap point of sale nano size pump and let it do the work for us..

Ive got one for mixing salt. Just thought the flask and magnetic stirrer looked super fancy:)

Might get something like that in the future but the pump will do for now, thanks!

I’m lazy I pump stir everything lol. I just make sure I run those mixing pumps in 50/50 vinager solutions for 24h then tap water for another 24h once a month.cant remember the last time I actually broke down a pump to brush clean it. 50/50 and let the pump run and it’s Gtg.

If using the same pump for different things I’d do this between uses. Really depends on how much you’re mixing too. I would t bother mixing 32oz with a pump but a few gallons... worth it to me.

How much are you dosing in dKH per day? Even a soft coral tank with coralline algae alone can consume 2 dKH per day.
I had no idea thats possible. Is it wrong to think the alkalinity is mainly used for calcification of new coral skeletons? I thought you could kinda approximate dkh/cal/mag consumption judging by coral growth rate.

The flask and stirrer are fun, but originally I just put it into a juice jug and shook it. The Kh buffer like all alk additives takes a long time to get clear.

The stirrer was only 20$ and 12 for the flask as I recall.

Does running them in vinegar also clean them from algae? Ive had my ro-di filters and resin getting saturated and produced water that wasnt 0ppm. Ive had some cyano after that that clogged my pumps. First time i noticed too late and lost some acros cause the tank had no flow at all for a few days.
I had exams in the same time and didnt notice earlier... luckily got everything back on track now

50/50 mix will clean everything. I buy a lot of used equipment off Craig’s list and swim swap for pennies. Most of it porly taken care of and I drop it all into a sink in the laundry room filled full of 50/50 plug the pumps in and let them run for 24h. They help clean the other non moving part items at same time by Thier flow. I even hang hob filters off the edge of the sink and inputs and outputs of canister filters. Even clear hoses come out looking brand new after this. I then drain the sink.. rinse everything lightly and then refill with just tap and let it run another 24h to rinse out the vinager as if left it will corrode parts. I then resell them for 2-3x what I paid for them. I’ve paid for several complete setups this way lol. When I get tanks I do the same basic setup.. only I use the tank as my sink.. then use one of the pumps to drain it if the water.. using a glass safe sponge to scrub it down while this Happens. I use vinager/water solutions for anything fish related to clean including my display glass as worst case a little vinager lands in tankand I’m carbon dosing lol. I keep a bottle of 9/1 filled at all times for glad cleaning though and use 50/50 for everything else. I’ve even used it to qt plants in a freshwater tank to clean them of black beard algae when I’m out of peroxide.

As a student this might be worth looking into haha. Sadly im from europe and the hobby is even less popular here. Not sure if i could make such a business out of it here but certainly worth trying.

Depends on the area.. where I am there is lots of first timers giving up and selling or trashing entire setups posting that they are sitting it at the curb as trash.. I run and pick up these ASAP sometimes it’s alreafy gone others I get a decent haul. The rest of the time I’m buying say someone’s used 125g salt tank for say $250 when I get there I see 2. Jackets of crushed corals, few hob filters and volume lights from smaller tanks.. I’ll offer them $300 for everything.bow I have a new tank I tear apart and reseal and bunch of equipment and supplies I didn’t need. Most times lights just need new $2 ballast or bulbs lol. Pumps just need cleaning. I have a 125 running bow that has two old ehime heaters that were at least 5 yo when I got them I can’t even read the writing in the calibration dial they are so worn. They are still running flawlessly and keep tank within 1* temp ranges even though I run my house st 76 during day and 68 at night lol. That tanks been setup for 3 years now with those heaters now approaching 8-9yo lol. Setup a new pico tank recently and used some crushed coral from a bucket I got for free as an extra as the bed for my fuge.. wove birches about all the crap I have but yet I build entire setups off pennies and junk I simply clean up and others I resell to buy new stuff. Just last week the light in my 75g turtle tank for the fish side quit. Went to garage dug out an old 36” si glue bulb hood for a 30g tank stripped the lighting part and it fits nicely lighting the area where the turtles basking area isn’t.. it’s amazing in my local area how much good stuff people are willing to give away when buying something else or sell for a fraction of the value simply cause they can’t order and replace a $5 part in a $60 light fixture like a ballast.

I'd say this is accurate as a statement, but even softies consume these things in their growth.

Mind sharing your tank size/stock aswell as your daily dose?
No problem! I switched from regular 2 part to aquaforest like almost 2 months ago so my system is still pretty new to it and is still in the adjustment period. Tank is 40 gal (33 gal water volume) sps Dom with some larger lps (big acan colony, large multi head lobo, and trachy) right now it's consuming 17 ml of each part per day but is increasing a few ml every couple weeks as my acro frags are starting to grow and encrust. Most of the acro frags are new as I lost all previous colonies to a lyngbya outbreak that forced a restart at the end of May.

Somethings gotta be off no way my 65 uses up 5 times more...

I bleached my tank during the reset so I have little to no Coraline algae growing right now my consumption is purely coral. You prob have much more coraline than I do right now. I expect my consumption to hit 25-35 ml a day within the next six months

17ml seems awful low. That's only .3 dkh alkalinity per day in a 40gal. That would give barely any growth and/or no coraline algae.
On my 90 cube that I'm just starting to re-stock corals in after my upgrade and restart I'm at 65ml per day. That's mostly just the coraline growth as I've only recently started putting in a few hard corals.

I'm dosing based on consumption and that's what it is atm, like I said I have no coraline and this keeps my dkh constant at 8. That in no way is limiting coral growth as that is meeting the requirements.

Makes perfect sense. I must have typed my post before refreshing the page to see your last one.

Hi, first check your magnesium levels see where they are. Make sure its in the proper levels.. 1250-1400 is good range

Second check your alk test kit is accurate use another to verify..

thirdly watch this video see if it helps

Ohh and when you do dose make sure you are dosing in high flow area with a minimum time of 30 minutes apart of each solution..e.g. alk dosed at 13:00 and then calc dosed at 14:30

Goodluck
