so I just had to have this carpet anem from my LFS but I did no research prior to buying until now... my tank is only 3 months old, have I made a mistake in buying this coral?

Most likely, did you cycle your rocks before your 3 months running time?

As a general rule of thumb, newer tanks' parameters tend to fluctuate more. It's more difficult to keep everything balanced as bacteria is still colonizing and usually the tank isn't fully stocked etc.

There's a lot of factors at play, but I believe 6 months is the recommendation for anemone.

Buying something without first doing research not only has the potential to kill a living organism, but also kill your wallet.

I would personally return the anemone, and do lots of research on caring for one...then come back in a few months and buy it!

I can’t say yes or no. When I started I did the same thing with a bubble anenome and it did end up dying. However I’ve bought 3 or 4 and they have all passed. I recently found out they require good lights and at the time I had black boxes. However, I couldn’t say it’s for sure going to die because I cycled my tank with bacteria bought at Petco and had fish and coral in the second week it was set up and the yellow tang and Duncan are both still alive 10 months later. I honestly wouldn’t say it’s the best idea because it’s expensive losing corals and fish and the parameters do fluctuate so much. I am currently battling a serious nitrate problem and have had to add some of those bio stones to the sump to hopefully grow bacteria and help me deal with the nitrates. Again, I’m not even close to an expert I still consider myself a beginner because my tank is less than a year old.

It’s not a coral and your tank is way to young. Please slow down and read up on what you want to buy.

I have 3 kessil 160s as lights but alright guesss ill just see what happens lolz

what are signs of it not doing well tho? just for future refrecene

That is the most honest answer.

You need long term, stable parameters before thinking about adding anything more challenging than clean up crew and vertebrates. A tank cycled with live rock and additives can conceivably have fish after 4-6 weeks but only if you are very confident in your chemistry.

my tank as is has around 5 nitrates showing, calclium 420, mag 1220, and alk 9.2

How about ph, salinity, temp? Are they stable throughout the day? Nitrates, phosphate?

Stability is more important than exact measure. Constant 1.023 specific gravity is not ideal for a reef tank but much better than SG that swings through the day/week depending on top off e.g.

It takes a while for the anaerobic bacteria to outcompete algae to the point it is the primary nitrate export. Until then there can be swings and bacterial blooms that make keeping more delicate creatures difficult.

eh my PH is questionable. I have a meter that says its 6.8 but idk if its right, waiting on a new one to come in and my salinity is .021, running an ATO so its pretty stable

and ive never checked my phosphate levels and my temp is usually around 78

Yeah are you saying your salinity is 1.021 if that’s the case it’s entirely too low. Please stop buying live stock until you understand their needs. You take on a responsibility when starting a tank to provide these animals with a good and healthy life. I’m not being mean or rude we have all lost tank inhabitants but learning from it is important and right now your grasp of this hobby is very low. Please again slow down and research on how to maintain a tank then tank it very slow. Believe me learning it in the beginning seems slow and unfun but it makes the endgame so much more enjoyable.

Carpets are pretty hardy though, so you will probably be alright...... definitely get the salinity up a bit though.

Don't start making drastic changes in a panic..... if he looks o.k., he's probably o.k.

He will close up/shrink up when not happy. If he does that during the day with lights on etc, then there is something wrong....

as of now hes open basically all day... but I did noticed that all the white stuff in the mouth came almost completely out once I put a little reefroids in my tank, is this normal as well? he also hasn't moved at all since I placed him in the tank

no offence taken my man, thanks for the advice. I am slowing raising my salinity with my top off water mixed at .025... is that the right way to go about it ?

Stop feeding it. That is not normal and is a sign of stress form being in a new tank. You salinity should be raised overtime and not all at once

yes I understand it should be raised over time which is why I mixed my ATO with .025 instead of leaving it fresh RODI, will that raise it enogh and not stress anything out?

Is this looking normal
