Its all i see... kindof like when purple hornets came on the market...

i give it 6 months before something else comes up and chalice prices half themselves...

What are your predictions?

Someone said the same thing 6 months ago :)

Chalice FAD has been going on for years now. Just seem like prices are getting higher not lower. Just my 2 cent.

i agree w/ ktar.

reason: echinos grow slow in relation to other "fad" corals. acans died out a little because of the high influx of new pieces (and faster grow rate).

well i guess im just seeing ALOT more of the Chalices so its overwhelming everything else i see... oh well.

I think that the Chalice fad has really slowed down a lot in the past 6 months or so. I see a lot of chalice for sale each day here on R2R and many times it takes several days for the frags to sell or they dont sell at all.
A year ago a Chalice frag would not last more than a couple minutes even if it was not all that nice.
I dont see people selling out on there collections but I would have to assume that a new big fad will takes its place, this happens with every fad coral.

IMHO this is because everyone's broke :squigglemouth:

yeah but the "designer ones" are still in very high demand. these are generally the most colorful and proven specimens

Watched a two eye Tyree Red Watermelon frag sell for $50 at a fragswap a few months ago... to me that's a sign things are slowing down.

But I don't think it's just chalices but the entire industry... hard economic times have tightened peoples wallets and they arent so quick to dish out huge amounts of cash for an eye or two of a coral that won't be decent sized for a year. I know wholesalers are hurting, LFS' a hurting, and locally the guys the propogate have really had to drop their prices. (BTW I live in San Diego).

Deffiantly true..

Things are evolving for sure, watermelons are down but my miami, mummy eye, pink ******* and flamethrower are up-- just takes time for these slow growers to become widely distributed and get aquacultured on a more wide spread basis, there will still be "Flavor of the weeks" but the reletive difficulty of this hobby will always ensure the price of brightly colored slow growers.

I remember my first thoughts-- when I was still green-- about how stupid people were for paying $20-$30 for small frags when they could get masive colonies of brightly colored common zoas and frogspawn for $50 or less.

Years later here and people are paying literaly thousands of dollars for a single eye frag.

I agree with Reefdan, its the ecomony. When it comes back so will coral sells. I don't have any chalices in my tank, but if I had the money to spend on them I would. There are some really nice ones out there for sale.

Chalice and favia are all I care to collect lately. To me the fad has just begun. ;)

I'm not fond of acans and I dislike paly's and zoanthids. Don't get me wrong, there are some awesome acans, paly's, and zoo's out there. They just aren't my thing. I think there's just as much of a Hornet fad as there is a chalice fad.

oh man. i just got started on favias too. TROUBLE !!! lol. even worse than the bank account stings is the stings those sweepers put on my other corals. LPS + 40 breeder full of corals don't mix

i hear ya there, too. i booted a few of mine from my frag tank to the display just because the sweepers are sooooooooo long!
