Chance of Survival?

Just had a few fish delivered.

What do you think the chances of this Blonde Naso tang surviving is?

Have to say that’s more movement than when he was in the shipping bag. I thought he was dead when I opened the box.

I floated for 30 minutes then drip acclimated for 60 minutes, discarding half volume twice during that 60 minute water acclimation.

I would have put netrile gloves on and held it gently moving it upright forward and back to help give it more oxygen through its gills. Not sure what store you bought that from online but if you haven't I would call them and start a refund process. If nothing else, assuming it does make it, then they need to know what happened.

It’s never good when a fish can’t keep itself upright. Are the white bumps extruding or do they look like patches of white skin? Humblefish has a thread on euthanasia if you feel he is suffering with no chance for recovery

They are white blemishes on the skin, not protruding.


I'm not feeling very good about the outcome on this one. Not swimming, just lying on it's side at this point, but that's even better than the head down and upside down that it was doing before.

If it’s doing better, I like to stay optimistic and hope it will continue to get better. But almost every fish I’ve watched die has appeared to get better before dying. I do advocate for euthanasia if you’re sure it’s going to die. Best of luck and I’m sorry you’re in this position.

Those are more than likely his stress spots, I’ve never seen them that bright but I’d guess that’s what they are. i don’t drip fish especially shipped ones because once you open the bag all of the waste in that small amount of water starts turning to ammonia. Temp match(float for 30 min), S.G match and put them in. You could try putting on a glove and holding him in front of a powerhead but tbh that doesn’t look good.

Drip acclimation per sellers instructions. I’m thinking hypoxia or ammonia. Thing looked dead when I first opened box. Was surprised to see some sort of movement when I began drip acclimation.

Hasn’t expired yet but still isn’t swimming around.

I dosed 15ml hydrogen peroxide to super oxygenate the water.

He is now holding his position in the water column.

You could also do a Methylene Blue bath as that will transpire O2 across his gills and it has antiseptic qualities.

Fish made it through the night. Holding steady and proper position in water column. See what day light brings. Hopefully, it will begin to explore the QT tank.

Although this is how most people would do it, and it's a good idea to get oxygen into the fish, you can damage the fishes gills by doing it this way. It's better to point the fish head first into a gentle current as when you pull the fish backwards you are putting pressure on the back of the gills which isn't designed to take it.

Hope that guy pulls through.

Placed some food in the tank. Perked him up to explore but didn’t really see it eat anything. I’d say cautiously optimistic. Only time will tell at this point. White blotches slightly less noticeable.

16 hours later. Wish I would have seen it eat but it’s looking and acting bit more normally. Maybe build up of ammonia in shipping bags was a culprit.
