Chasing coral reefs Netflix documentary

It is a true people/planet problem, the political issues attached are a result of our inaction as a global society. Bleaching started in the 80's, that's 30 plus years ago, our first call to arms as environmental stewards. We failed then and are failing now. Really fixing the issue would take global effort and more on developed nations like the US since our carbon footprint for 320 million is nearly as bad as some with 2 billion. For reference each of us on average are 27x more "polluty" than an average individual from India. The choices you make collectively will have an impact on this. For instance skipping a pound of steak for dinner and having a veggie feast will consume 4,000 less gallons of water it took to grow feed for the cow and tons of co2 and methane will be reduced by lowering the demand.

You know the reduce/reuse/recycle chant, capt'n planet and all that jazz? It's time we all did that and I hope NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, a hippy or government man reading this you can all agree you can focus on what YOU need to do. Watch the movie, get hyped and do something.

A tiny drop in the bucket, but also making sure we as a hobby don't make any impact on the natural coral reefs. In theory all the LFS and hobbyists right this second should have all the coral we really need already in the US. If we shut down all the importation of corals we should be fine with more than enough variation. Local clubs, frag swaps, and trading/selling between each other should be the norm. Instead many are striving to have that elusive rare "vivid" wild colony that no one else has, just to have it die in the tank and then purchase another and another and another... There is no reason the hobby should be kicking the natural reefs while they are down.

Or instead of preaching, go get a degree in practical and theoretical physics to get fusion perfected. Let's get down to brass tacks, this will only be solved by a truly clean form of cheap energy that allows humanity to live in comfort. Anything else is someone from a position of privilege and comfort trying to dictate to other people how they need to live their lives, which is either ineffective, or if made effective through government force, tyrannical.

Not to mention other initiatives could get you a far bigger bang for your buck like agricultural runoff and the like, but it's not the subject of a flawed tear and feeling jerking documentary so..... Anyhow back to the bourbon.

You have some good points, however the reason we in the states produce more than a country like India isn't solely because we consume too much and they love nature.
It's mostly because they are underdeveloped and are just coming around to developing resources now. If anything, this shows that they (and china) will only produce so much more as the years go on.

This isn't just on China, it's on all developing nations. They just don't care about the cost of development. People who used oil lamps for decades will not suddenly worry about their carbon footprint when they finally get electricity...

I think you mean fusion. Cold fusion is pseudo science alchemy. And I agree with you.

I watched it last night and it's disheartening to see all these ecosystems dying at an alaraming late. When most of the world is believing it, unfortunately being the world leader our president Trump doesn't believe in it and withdrew ourselves from Paris climate conf. Atleast the previous leaders believed in it and was supporting the NGOs working on the environmental change. As US with drew itsself from the Global warming, the stocks of the companies who are into natural energy bottomed and this caused a huge impact on the innovation they are doing. Its shame that our so called leader doesn't believe in in. All in all every county has to come together and think about how we can reduce the co2 emission into the air.

Let's save the planet for future generations.

That's why we have Paris Accord, which is to bring all these developing countries together and help them with our technologies so that they don't produce as much CO2. We complain that they aren't doing enough and the agreement is unfair to us, but China has 1.4 billion people and India has 1.3. Both historically and per capita, we still contributed more to global warming than them. If we play the blaming game we won't be able to stop this. Think about it; we didn't care about the cost, did we? Who are we to blame? But can we at least do something to help them reduce that cost now that we have all those technologies we can use? The real sad part is that, ironically, the leader today in clean energy industry is China. If you visit that country you might be surprised to see their speed of approaching clean energy. The vast majority of them believe in global warming and want to do something to reduce smog and pollution. They have cities with all electric buses, massive fields of solar panels, and an embracing attitude towards clean energy.

I quit a nice 6 figure job in oil and gas to get my B.S. In environmental science with a concentration in water management and hydrologic science. I did this because my last project poisoned a whole town and my employer just turned a blind eye. I took the self initiative needed, I can ask the same of anyone who decides to open their eyes and wants to do better.

I am still unemployed thanks to the current political choices made, I had an internship at the EPA region 8 under the energy advisor for 6 months and a potential job lined up. But instead of cry about it, I am getting my masters in Natural Resource Stewardship. We need more people with direction than people who spew incorrect information to feel good about not doing anything about it.

I do know what needs to happen (not every single detail), but from my experience a reduction in energy use and a transfer to a combination of natural power sources, wind, thermal, solar reactors, barium reactors and a gamut of things we already have, even tidal power. We have the ability to start to do what we need RIGHT NOW. I have done it myself, and was the reason I felt the need to share even knowing I would have people tell me I am wrong. I have cut my water bill in half, electricity by 35%, made my family eat primarily vegetables and meat only twice a week. And I quit doing stupid stuff like wasting stuff I could compost, tossing saltwater down the drain (makes for a great week killer) buying frivolous things that are not needed and even.

If any of you need help and would like ideas of where to start helping reduce emissions and save the reefs, or just bettering yourself and personal practices please PM. I am more than glad to help anyone, anytime I can.

Every reefer has the truth in his/hers living room. Everyone can see the effect in the aquarium of rising temperature and rising of CO2 in the room. There is a lot of threads here at reef2reef about low pH and use of CO2 scrubbers.

Everyone in here can do the experiment to rise the temperature over 30 degree C and invite all neighbors, close the doors and windows and look what’s happen with the corals. You do not need a university degree to understand this, or study books – it’s just in front of your eyes.

And if you see this in your own livingroom - you will act - or not.....?

You do realize we aren't just saying "no more environmental studies or protection!" Right??? We just aren't footing the bill while others don't. Come on now, do a bit of research of what the Paris climate accord really is and the role we played.

Lol, keep believing that.

So in your mind if nobody else pitches in than screw it, your taking your toys and going home!

Exactly.

Also add some oil and fertilizer for the run off effect, to your tank.

As someone with air quality experience at the EPA the Paris accord was not enough globally, but at least it was a start. The price was based on our GDP was it not?
