Cheap Corals? What corals are cheap?

Do corals need a light?
photosynthetic corals absolutely need a light.
Non-photosynthetic corals don't need any light.

If you are referring to the corals that majority of us keep in our tanks, then yes, you need a light.

I would recommend only those that do need light when starting this hobby. Non photosynthetic corals need feeding since they do not have photosynthesis happening. They tend to be harder to keep. Or at least more maintenance.

Okay i will lookk at more lights then

What are some cheap corals that I can use i dont want expensive ones yet
Zoas are super easy and super cool (and cheap). Mushrooms are also pretty low cost. The only thing is that it’s only up from
there. The next place to go is probably a torch or hammer coral as those are easy but the prices range anywhere from 80 - 350 CAD. After that i’d see what you can find for other cheap LPS corals, Then if you have the gear and your tank has matured move in to SPS if you desire.

Do you need corals? Or can it just be liverock for a clownfish, yellowwatchmangoby, blue legged hermitcrab, and a clowngoby in a 20 gallon

Another great one is Duncan’s. They do grow quickly, which is good for me personally but perhaps not ideal in you smaller tank. Zoas are good but I would be cautious and look into palytoxin before you get any, not common, but something to keep in mind. Other good ones are candy canes. I got a 25 dollar 30+ polyp and it has probably doubled in polyps.

So dose that mean i need a light im sure if either way if you do or not, i gonna probably get one.
Light in a fish only tank would be mostly for you to see and enjoy them. You could definitely get a cheaper light that does not need to grill corals.

Dose a lamp light work
Sure for fish I suppose. Probably just your room light honestly. But the tank will look so much better likely with an aquarium light. For fish only you can get cheap lights from Petco or PetSmart. I do not use lights on my quarantine tank unless I’m inspecting the fish.

Corals that should be free from local reefers: GSP, Xenia, Kenya tree

Cheap $5-$10 corals:
Zoas, blue mushrooms, common favias and cynastrea

Cheap $10-$20 corals
Common acans, green birdsnest, orange digi
