Chromis and fish chasing

I don't think I ever want a chromis or multiples in a tank again, lol. I have no doubt there is 0% chance any new chromis would last a day. Not worth this risk of adding something that has a greater likelihood of carrying uronema than doesnt.
I've got 11 chromis in my tank right now. According to urban legend, they should have started cannibalizing each other months ago. Strange that since I started feeding them non-stop I haven't lost any... Chromis are like sharks... always swimming, eating...

I think playing the waiting game is what I'd opt for. I've seen even tiny wrasses go after much larger fish when they get seriously ticked off.

So Wednesday is the day. Having a fishing party at the house. We are going to get the fish out on a hook and line. I have had the fish for a very long time, so although I hate thing, I still want to try and make it work, lol. If I keep the fish in a separate tank for a month and then add it back to tank would it leave the orangeback wrasse alone on reintroduction?

I think the better question to ask is: after finally managing to catch it, do you want to go through all of that again if he once again resumes his chasing habits? :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I guess that will depend on how quickly 3 of us can catch it with a bunch of lines, lol.

Not trying to laugh, but I'm picturing this 3" green chromis chasing your wrasses around while completely ignoring all these baited hooks...

I'm still kind of taken aback with his behavior, as chromis aren't really known for hot pursuits - and most wrasses would just tear them a new one.

I've had my group of green chromis for around 2 years now and they've never been anything more than free swimmers. Maybe I'm overfeeding them or just have too many other fish to keep them in-line.

The orangeback is small. Probably only 1.5 to 2 inches. The chromis is certainly bigger than it.

I've had some (smaller) wrasses as well, but the chromis never gave them a second thought. I do have four 4"-7" wrasses now, though.
My old orangeback was a full grown 5 to 6 inches. The chromis never went after it. It is odd. I have an exquisite and a pintail it seems to leave alone most of the time. Something about thr orangeback ticks it off.

Couldn't catch the chromis with a hook and line. Could have caught everyone else. Caught everyone else in the nyos trap except for the chromis.

Yes. The chromis should "chill" at some point, but you may need some other free swimming fish (like anthias) to mix things up a bit. I have 5x green chromis, 2x bicolor chromis, 1x black bar chromis and 4x lyretail chromis - and despite some of the green chromis being easily 3" - they never chase any of the other fish. The lyretail are rock dwellers and only territorial around their haunts.

My green chromis generally sleep in the corners of the tank at night - so that may be a better time to try and catch the sucker.
Hey Jay,
I picked up around 8 green chromis from a different LFS. Should I QT him differently, I’ve read things about uronema and that’s kinda scared me. I picked up a few extra since they were $15/piece and I wanted some color in the tank. They didn’t have any anthias. I plan on installing a lifegard UV soon sometime in 10 days or so( or do you recommend the Aquatic brand). Now I’m nervous lol.

Do yourself a favor. Return the fish. You will thank me later.

I've only really used AquaUV, but I hear a lot of good things about Lifegard - so I think you'd be fine with either.

Yes, uronema is something that can happen in chromis (but also other fish) - so if you got them from a different LFS I'd probably do the same quarantine/observation.

Ironically this is the regular LFS I go to often. This was minutes within adding to tank. I wasn’t sure but I saw the red spots and within seconds pulled out live rock and removed these two. Observed the others and seemed fine.

Now I’m ordering the lifegard this week. Also is it better to order fish online quarantined? dangit these LFS are always a pain. They don’t really quarantine, have a low copper in tank and do FW dips not even the blue dips or Prazipro.

I have two 10 gallons but the fish are already in the tank
My experience with chromis/anthias is feed a lot 3-4 times a day small amounts with a automatic feeder with that many I would probably do the 4x and maybe a little frozen at the end of the day you should be ok

Noted I need to get an automatic feeder too. Any recommendations? And the food you use?

My old green chromis is a terror. Added 3 fairy wrasses back in the beginning in May. It constantly chases the orangeback wrasse and basically all of the wrasses hide in the rock and have scrapes on their sides from darting away from that little terror. It's a 200 gallon acro dominated tank. I have tried everything to catch the chromis including fishing in the tank and it's impossible to get out. Before I essentially destroy 7 years of acro growth to take a part the entire tank is there any chance they can ever coexist. The orangeback right now is on the very small side. The chromis is bigger. As the wrasse grows will the chromis kind of chill out?
Have you thought about adding other green chromis? They chase each other around a lot, so maybe that would take the attention off of the wrasse?
