Chromis disease?

One of my favorites -- quite underrated IMO

@4FordFamily it's amazing to me to read all the conflicting information on chromis aggression. They are labeled as peaceful but I find that not the case. Also I have read that they are great beginner fish but that is debate able as well if they are known to have uronema as @Humblefish pointed out.

I agree with you completely. I've tried to add Chromis to my tank twice and have never gotten them through QT successfully. I've found them to be a very frustrating fish.
Many times when you see fish listed as peaceful, it is referring to how they interact with other species. Chromis are nice to anything that doesn't look like them.

I may need to setup a separate qt for picachu to get him in my dt sooner. I dislike him being in quarantine with the unknown chromis issue

You have to QT them separately (in compartments), and then when added to the DT have a predator in the tank they will all fear. ;)

I'd like to turn my female clown on that dude. She is fierce and attacks me when my hand goes near her corner. I was placing a rbta in her area and had to drop it into place. It ended ok.[emoji3]

Well, crap. I've been lucky enough to have six survive in QT for two weeks using CP as a preventative thanks to Humblefish's advice...read this post and turned around to see two of my Chromis with red spots. I've been closely watching them every single day, this group was not picking on each other and I was so happy I finally didn't have problems with them. Arghhh!

Give them formalin baths quick and transfer into a fresh QT.

Where did your CP come from and what dosage have you been treating with?

15mg/liter. I will up the dose to 20mg in a fresh QT.

As far as purity - I have no way to be sure I have a good batch. None of the vets I contacted in my area would write a script. I was so P.O.'d. and needed it quickly last time you helped. I sourced it from two places hoping I'd average out if one was not 99% pure. Sources were:

https://www.aqua-algae.com/product-page/chloroquine-phosphate

I have a question for anyone willing to answer. I know there are varying degrees of success with keeping Chromis. They are beautiful fish and that's why I wanted to try to get them through QT and take a chance on having the problems I'm having now. Here's the question: If Chromis are so much trouble to keep healthy and alive through quarantine with uronema, what are their chances once they are integrated into the DT? The uronema issue doesn't just go away once you get them through the disease once, does it?

Interested in this as well.

CP (or metronidazole) dosed into a QT should eliminate the disease entirely.

However, you may also need to food soak metronidazole (using a binder) because the disease can spread internally.

@Humblefish I dosed the first round of general cure (on hand) to my QT on Sunday and was planning on dosing the second today (48 hours later). If I were to dose in food, focus, metroplex, and garlic guard (received today) how long should I wait and does this still make sense?

Thanks in advance!

GC contains both prazi + metro, so I wouldn't dose that again for a week (the 48 hours directions are wrong.)

In the meanwhile, I would dose Metroplex every 48 hrs after dosing GC... except skip the Metroplex dosage when its time to do the second round of GC (to avoid overdosing metro.)

Food soak metro (using Focus) every day, regardless of whether you dosed metro into the water on that day.

So starting today.

day 1 dose metroplex in water column and food
day 2 dose in food
day 3 dose in food
day 4 dose in water column and food
day 5 dose in food

Whenever next Sunday hits dose GC and skip metro in the water column and food

Formalin dosed in a QT should work, and would be a responsible practice.

Personally (and I shouldn't admit this), the last couple times I've bought chromis I took the irresponsible approach and put them right it my display. The key is to buy them from a LFS that dips and then wait a solid week, that way if they still had Uronema they would have died (generally) before I buy them.

I have 7 that school together in my 150H that I bought in two separate batches. I have another 4 in a 60cube. Out of all of these I have lost exactly 1 over the course of 18 months with these new tank setups (so success over time of 11/12).

Uronema aside, I think a major problem with Chromis is husbandry. They are not an "easy keeping" fish like a clown. I feed 5x or so per day and I believe, like Anthias, that they need constant feeding. I think I am also having success due to a lot of open swimming space in both tanks. There are also lots of small acro heads that they sleep in and retreat to when scared. My 150H has approx. 15" of open water across the whole span of the tank above the reef. Chromis I have had in the past never schooled like this and they always whittled their way down.

^^ Possibly this method will rid a chromis of uronema, if the fish is next transferred into a clean/sterile QT. Formalin breaks down quickly in water, and the fish will just get reinfected if he remains (or is transferred back into) the original QT.

Also, formalin is a known carcinogen. Therefore, precautions must be taken when using it. Preventing your skin from coming in contact with it by wearing waterproof gloves and not breathing in any fumes by wearing a face mask is highly recommended. Formalin also can be harsh on the fish's gills and will quickly deplete oxygen from the water. So, provide plenty of gas exchange whilst using it.

@Humblefish since Uronema should have taken out my fleet of chromis in the amount of time I've had them, do you think that the above is still in order?

I would, yes; because uronema can spread internally out of sight. Also, if your chromis were exposed to copper before you got them that can delay symptoms.

Thanks!
I am on it. I just noticed the one with the stringy poo has a red stripe instead of the white patch it had yesterday. I will dose the metro this week, then on Sunday will do the second course of GC.

The Chromis were in copper from LFS, the Goby was not since he was in a reef tank at the LFS. The Goby had been with them for quite some time. The Chromis with the original symptoms is doing great. The one showing signs now is breathing heavy..... The third (bully) is doing the same as he always, he's great, but aggressive.

I'll keep ya up to date after a couple days.

One last question... Is this a futile effort? Will these 3 Chromis be plagued with this forever?
Ok, I know, that was 2 last questions:)

Again I appreciate all the help and advice. This truly is a great forum, with caring people.
