Just picked up this guy today. This is my first clam (besides hitchhiker). It was labeled as a Dersara but looks more like a Crocea or Maxima to me. I'm not expert on clam identification, I just really liked the pattern on this and gave it the go. Just added today, not fully open yet.

I really don't mean to go against the grain but I'd bet some money that's a squamosa . "Teardop" species was lumped together with squamosa and this clam clearly has a tear drop pattern. Can we get some pics of the flukes

Looks Crocea to me, a pic of its shell (especially the underside) would be helpful in identifying it. Important to get an id as different varieties require different placement and lighting considerations.

I will get some better photos later today of the shell and everything. I will also count the folds. So I take it $60 was a deal on this guy?

Probably a silly question and wasn't thought through very well. Will my red/orange Linkia eat the clam?? I know most starfish do, mine has never touched the small hitchhiker one though. I seen my star close to it this morning and immediately sumped it.

Read up on the clam forum stickies for id help, useful links, and care tips; seems like you got this guy before researching all this stuff (most of us have done that with livestock at one time or another). I love having a clam in my reef but to have long term success with them you have to provide good stable conditions and be aware that not all critters are clam friendly. $60 bucks seems like a good deal to me assuming it's healthy. Best of luck with it!

Looks like a Crocea to me, perhaps a hybrid.

I will say that it's a clam. I can definitely tell you that. Oh and it's not a maxima, I see many others concur!
