For me it is worth but I had wanted one for a long time.
Mine has been very hardy with no issues I have an:
ORA Tank Raised Crocea Clam

Maxima and derasa clams need a lot of light. So I started with a squamosa about 6 months ago, and it's doing fine. And it was considerably cheaper.

I currently have a Biota tank raised crocea and it's been great for 6 months and counting. I also have a large solitary tunicate, which are supposed to be notoriously difficult, that's been in the tank nearly as long. I simply monitor my parameters and dose live phyto regularly. The live phyto definitely seems to make the difference when it comes to young clams.

Overall, they're not as difficult as some make them out to be. If it's your first clam you may want to start off with a medium sized individual as opposed to a baby.

I love clams! They are extremely efficient at alkalinity uptake though, so honestly I think they do better long term in tanks larger than 40g. They are fantastic reef creatures.

I got mine at a reef show. $40. I've had him 6 years now or so.
If you get one that not to small they are hardier. Acclimate and burb.

I let my 8 year old talk me into getting one at reefapalooza 2 years ago. I was so glad he did. It is a family favorite.

I just got clam fever! Got a 3.5 “ derasa a month ago, doing great so far! On the sand bed, I dose phyto once or twice a week. They do good with a high nutrient system. Make sure you do not have any fish that can pick at them, angels and some wrasses etc.

I tried 3 different clams and I killed them all and wasted a lot of money! There just not for me .

How old and what size is your tank?

Clams are really cool, come in a bunch of colors and look awesome from the top of the tank. Like most people have said, try to get something larger since they will rely more on lighting than filter feeding. If your tank is less than 6 months old or your parameters aren't stable, I would suggest waiting.

My guess is you should be good to give one a try.
I've had my Maxima for 1.5 years. It was about 3" when I got it and now it's 5" or so.
