Clams-are they worth it?!

I loved my clam I had in my last reef tank. It’s one of the things I miss the most

agreed that they can be a lot of money but I think they are very unique and beautiful.

so my best advice is to just make sure your tank is established and you have a good light source.

I purchased a hybrid when they were out years ago, it’s a mimosa. Fantastic water filter, IMO easy care. It’s definitely gained in size and weight.

Are clams worth it

How hearty are they?

want one, just unsure and don’t wanna waste $$
IDK up to you

can cost lots depending on clam

they are pretty sensitive

You will need to dose calcium, when it dies your calcium can spike by quite a lot

they need filter feeder food so the nitrates could be high maybe if you don't take care

pros:
IMO they are one of the most cool looking animals in the hobby

Already does calcium

Was 500 last week

maybe will help suck up some calcium

I don’t find the clam sensitive, I don’t dose filter feeder food for it either. It gets what it needs from the water. I dose TM carbo calcium, everything is happy.

Once established 6+ months, i dont think they are very sensitive (way less than acropora). I think tank maturity and biological stability play a huge role, and then uk the huge amount of alk and calc they consume. Had mine for 5 years in a 34 gallon mostly using water changes to deal with calc and alk, died in the house move when it got knocked off the rock ):

I think the clam is one of the coolest things in the tank. So much color. 6" maxima on the glass bottom under 8 bulb T5.

as long as params are good, they are very hardy to other factors too

AlgaeBarn should be proud of this Crocea ORA clam I purchased about a year ago. I think it is for sure doubled in size. It is particular in lighting, alkalinity and calcium to say the least. It really helps keep the water column clean as well as being very beautiful.
