Thinking about picking up a cleaner wrasse this week, just wondering if people can give any advice/tips/warnings. Just anything from people who have one!

Current stock
Yellow tang
2 perc clowns
2 lyre tail anthias
Lawn mower blenny
Yellow barrel chested wrasse

I've had one for over three years I've found them a Very useful fish It's like having a doctor in your tank constantly cleaning all the other fish Some people find hard to keep and some don't I would highly recommend them

They are reef safe it's never touched anything In my reef tank and if you look in any reference books they all say reef safe

The main problem I hear is that they are notorious for starving to death.

It would be good to hear from anyone who owns one (for at least 6 months).

As I said I've had mine for over three years and have had others in the past that lasted for many years

I have had one for 2 years in a 60 gallon cube. Mine is a little different than most. It eats furiously, probably more than anything else in the tank.
DISCLAIMER: This is my experience with my common cleaner wrasse, fish have different likes and dislikes as well as personalities. Just like people :)

I watched mine eat at the store before buying it. Never had problems getting it to eat.

Pros:
good at cleaning up ick
very active fish
interesting to watch cleaning.

Cons:
-Jumper (I have a net over the tank and he has ended up in the overflow from hitting the net and landing in the overflow a few times)
-Mine likes to pick at clams, most don't however. (this was a healthy clam that I had for years before the cleaner wrasse, I put the cleaner wrasse in the sump and let the clam recover then I sold the clam)
-They can do their job too well. Meaning they will end up pestering fish like tangs and butterflies into hiding.

If I was to do it over again I would get a pair of neon gobies. Still interesting fish, clean up parasites, dont pester fish, and less likely to starve to death.

Hope this helps.

Hey Geohawk,

How much do they stress tangs out? (I am just concerned that a fish going nuts eating off my tang could cause it to stress out and catch ich)

Dont get a cleaner wrasse unless you have alot of fish and a good size tank..200gal+
Longest ive kept a cleaner was 2 years still alive but he eats everything mysis, and frozen foods. After a good meal he looks like he ate a marble but by end of day its gone. They need to be able to clean fish and have large enough tank to pick lots of things off the rocks. If not the will annoy fish trying to eat off them all day the starve.

I've had mine for about a year, eats pellets, and flakes. It also picked at my clams
