Pretty sure you folks have heard about a cleanse  many of you guys/gals have tried it and it's pretty disgusting IMO in the first three days, headaches, cranky, not in the mood for anything, aggressive in traffic and craving for a juicy burger and French fries with mayo in the final day but you holding strong  as always.
The mean green juice mix for three day can exist from the following 1 Granny Smith Apple,
1 Cucumber, 4 Stalks of Celery, 4-6 Kale Leaves, 1/4 Lemon Peeled, 1″ Ginger................ HELLO!!!
Yep even me will start up again next week.
But what about the CLEANSE of your tank................ ever thought about that?
How do you cleanse your tank............ no not with a cloth.......... someone mentioned that before and that didn't work out so well :p............. or do you ever cleanse your tank?
The answer is, WHAT.....??
Yes you can cleanse your tank and NO you don't dump a bunch of the
Mean Green Juice mix in there o_O.
First of all why do you need to cleanse your tank, well simply to boost the bacteria level a fresh start and the corals will get rid of all that nasty fatty acid what we all dosing not to mention your fish as well and all your rock will be nice and detritus free not to mention most algae will reduce.
Here is what you do or what I do for the last 12 years, I cover my tank up with black towels so no light can come in, leave everything running but turn your doser or CaRx off, and turn lights off.
Make sure no daylight can come in the tank either.
I do this only for two days.
When my lights are off in the morning I cover up the tank so all fish will be still in hiding and corals are in feed mode for most part, yes kinda like the 3 days darkness method.
After two day you will take the towels off and turn lights back on schedule, note if you run T5 reduce the strength as in turn half of the bulbs off for two days, with LED's just reduce everything for 50%.
Do the cover up in the morning and uncover as well in the morning.
After all come back to normal in two day you will detox the system and I use the Triton Detox as of now.
Before the Triton Detox I used the activated carbon that worked well or the Metasorb UHC from TLF, what also worked well was and still is Chemi-Pure.
The Triton Detox is simple just dose in your tank and let it be for three days, NO AC reactor or skimmer for three days, after that start it all up and filter it out.
Your corals are able to feed them self a lot better and the color on some of the LPS are just crazy.
Fish are vibrant and swim a lot more.

So here you have it, while you do a deep cleanse on yourself why not on your reef at the same time,
it keeps you busy so you don't have time to be cranky or not in the mood, no time to be aggressive and you do something you like to do.
I prefer to start this on Friday as you have to whole weekend to cleanse at the same time your equipment from the sump in a vinegar bath.
Some ppl ask me how often I do this, well I do the towel thingie every month and the detox every four months.

I gotta try this. I'm doing a lot of maintenance on my son's tank.

Thanks Ben. Always a wealth of knowledge.

@Diesel , any variation in no3 and po4 when you do it
Thanks

Nope, cause your skimmer stays on during the two days of total darkness and you don't feed anything, no fish food or coral food Nada, nope, nichts, niks, njet, nothing. ;)

I understand that the reef can survive for 2 days without light but how does that cleanse?

Due to all the critters in your tank and cause nothing will grow with no light your rock will clean up pretty good, only the good stuff stays behind.
Hobbyist do a 3 day total darkness if they want to get control on algae without using any miracle bottles.
I have done 4 days but only on a tank that's running about 2 years and all corals are colonies and no small frags or frags younger than six months.

I looked for the blue glow this morning but it wasn't there  when I drove over 610 parking lot
lol, garbage trucks weren't meant to slide sideways down an exit ramp. Especially when someone's SUV is on fire in the main lanes.

Going to have to try this out Diesel. I don't really have any algae issues but my corals seem to be taking a hit from something.
