I used carbon for a year changing every two weeks.. IMO the best water clarifier I have found for my 240 is filter sock stuffed with pillow stuffing.. I haven't ran carbon in almost 7 months since I found this product in a similar thread asking the same question.. Also while I was running carbon ZOA's didn't open wide now I can't frag them fast enough.. Again its just my opinion

We run carbon just like the rest of the Reefer's,

I run it in a reactor, and have very clear water and no harm to fish or corals.

Pillow stuffing you say.?

Just regular pillow stuffing I use it in both my freshwater cichlid tank and my 240 reef.. Looking for the tread now will add link when I find it again lol

Its been said carbon can cause problems with tangs sometimes. I never had any issues with my Yellow Eye Kole tang using it, but something to watch for. If you start seeing signs of HLLE you may want to stop using it if you have any tangs.

We have 3yellow tangs, 1 Kole Tank, 1 Blue tang.

No adverse affects to them.

So now I like this idea of the pillow stuffing.. And my tubbing is already set up for an easy mod for it.. Ima give it a try to see if I get clearer water.. So I can hold off on carbon for a lil while..

My recommendation, if clear water is something you want, is to get a zeovit reactor. Korallin Zucht makes both a carbon, meant for use in conjunction with a zeovit reactor, and a product called coral snow, that boosts water clarity. I use both, and get compliments on my water clarity. I have one acrylic tank, and one starphire glass tank. Both have water that is as clear as air.

I will look this up.. It sounds like its worth it..

I'm a huge fan of Purigen and Chemipure.

I have a 40B with a 20g sump, and I have 250ml of purigen (split into 2 separate media bags) and 2 units of Chemipure elite. That's more than I need for my tank size, but I change the chemipure every 8-10 months or so, and I'll recharge 1 of the purigen bags every 4-6 months.

About as easy, maintenance free, and inexpensive as it gets.

The pillow stuff sounds just like a filter sock. Different and never heard of it.
I use polyester in "sheet" form they use for quilts in my HOB freshwater filters. They work well, but they do release more fibers into the water than stuff specifically made for aquariums. Not a ton, but enough where I get little strands to clean off my Koralias. This was bought at Walmart, however. Not sure if this varies by brand or not. And putting it in a filter sick would probably help a lot with that.

I use mesh filter socks not the felt. Can buy 10 micron on ebay. I clean in sink and put back on tank in no time flat. I will soak in some vinegar to clean a bit better tho.

Ok so I have went and tried the pillow stuffing.. And I'm here to say that the results are way better than what I expected.. Just in a few hours my water was crystal clear.. Even the algae growth on my glass has reduced drastically.. And I thank everyone for the advise here.. Pillow stuffing worked for me.

I would first try carbon or chem pure plus but I also like to put water polishing fiber or really a piece of cloth made by deep blue above my filter sock to skim the particles before it gets into the sock really clears up the tank. If you take that same cloth to a local fabric store they can match it up so you can get a whole roll for the same price as the small piece you will buy from deep blue. If you want to spend a little more money buy a carbon reactor and use the cloth, your water should look great. Frequent water changes always help as well.
