Ive been struggling with my sps dying over about two weeks. I’ve had them under microscopes and no signs of infestation, I’ve watched to see if any fish are to blame and can’t see anything eating them.

The Monti are worst effected, colour first greyed out, then the tissue seemed to dissolve. Now I’m seeing similar happening on my stylo’s. They literally look like I’ve just taken them out the tank and plonked them back, patches of faded dissolving tissue, poor polyp extension and new growth is bleached.

I did a load of tests...
Salinity 1.025
Calcium 380
Ph 7.7
Potassium 370
Nitrate 30
Magnesium 1200
Iron 0,01mg/l at most!
Phosphate 0.2
Alk 7.7

I use natural seawater and have done for six years, lighting not changed, flow not changed the only issue I’ve been having continually is with carbon dosing I can’t get my nitrates and phos down consistently (all over the place but NO3 is never below 5ppm and phos is always a sod!) and it’s been about 7 months of dosing at full dosage. Which works out for my tank 21mls dosed with auto dosing pumps over 24 hours. Long story short used NoPox for ages and worked perfect, switched to Vodka Vinegar dosing, nitrates went over 100ppm and switching back to NoPox it’s not working?!

I get huge clumps of bacteria flocks, looks like white slime along the waterline and low flow areas which I manually remove...it’s like snot!. I run 2 x Deltec AP850 and a BM NAC6 should be way to much skimming!

I do water change once a week about 25%, use a rock steady calcium reactor tuned to my NSW parameters.

So why are my sps suddenly dissolving! Anemone’s (Ritteri, BTA, carpets, maxi mini) all thriving, my Zoa and mushrooms as slow but steady and my LPS look very happy growing ok.

My irons almost undetectable and potassium low, could this be the cause and is the bacteria from carbon dosing to blame. Nitrate and phos are really high this week for no obvious reason.....I literally thinking of switching back to fresh!

Yeah that’s gone low as well. I’ve even got mag chips in the calcium reactor, but fat lot of good it’s doing.

I’m going to do a bunch of water changes to get everything back in line, but I just can’t work out why mag, iron, potassium are depleting in comparison to usual. Plus I still can’t work out why my NoPox don’t work and just leaves snot all over my tank, blocks the pump, sump and overflows. It’s not dino or cyano, it’s def linked to NoPox. It’s like 2am in the morning and I can’t sleep thinking about it!

I would consider having a ICP test done. I suspect water contaminants.

I used to do them monthly for years and results were always pretty similar so got lazy. I should send one off again, see what comes up.

I should add, the water quality was always very good, 98% range. Probably no where near that now.

NoPox is carbon dosing. Same as vodka or vinegar. The snot is bacterial bloom from the carbon dosing.

98% ? Not sure I understand. TDS?

I used ATI labs, they break all the elements down and then you get a overall score and 100% considered perfection. My score was consistently very high, my old pump increased the aluminium in the water and used to reduce the quality slightly.

Gotcha. If pulling NSW from a local source close to the beach, I would suspect contaminants.

Time for a test. I'd run some GAC and do some water changes to see if it helps.

Have you looked at Tropic Marin bacto balance to manage no3 & po4? Maybe switch to that once you’ve had a read up instead of nopox,
and as above just run carbon parallel.

A.

My vote is NSW. I've had issues in the past when corals did not like the water change. I would not buy my water but collect it here in S. Florida. I would use a well pump and keep a 100 gallon reservoir holding tank. I stopped. I now use salt mix with RODI and things have been great. Sun tan lotion, boat oils, whatever...you take a risk now with NSW. Sad.

I use to go to the beach 30 years ago and never had an issue. These days, it seems like you have a 20% chance of bad NSW.

Send a sample of your NSW source in with your tank water. ATI will test both right?

Most likely it would be two different charges for testing. Definitely worth it though if everything has been stable and numbers have been good.

I personally run high N03 in my system. Around 40-50 ppm. Never had a event like the OP's.

Your pH is a little low - though that's not usually an issue - your Mg is low. I would not use Nopox. Do you think its possible that as one coral is 'dying' its releasing toxins that are affecting the others? Do you use Carbon (GAC - not carbon dosing) - Have you taken the coral thats affected out and fragged it? Is there any evidence of any parasites/something that is 'eating the coral'?

If your anemones and others are fine - that would go against a 'toxin' in your water source (I think).
I wouldn't give up.

When you buy ATI's kit you get 4 water holders or tubes I guess. 3 are for your tank water and the 4th which has a red cap is for fresh water RO/DI which is optional. So the answer is no. One test requires the 3 tubes so you can't mix and match. If you want to test a NSW source then it is another test kit.

While I understand the concern using NSW the key is to know where you are going to pick it up from. When I use it the rules of thumb I follow are confirming I am not pulling out of a state park or marine reserve, low public traffic, and ease of collection. Usually I will collect water on the same day of my dives in Monterey. On the way home there are a few places that have good access and clean areas to pull from.

Never had an issue. Now ask me if I would collect in the San Fran bay or anywhere in that area the answer is NO! :) Monterey though - good stuff but too far to do it more frequently although I am considering using a couple 55 gallon drums to store longer term now after seeing the BRS video on storage/salt mix and test results.

Although nopox is carbon dosing, it's a different strand. Due to timing and length of time between stopping and switching explains why you're not seeing immediate results. I experienced the same thing sheen going from vinegar to nopox and took a few weeks

Salinity 1.025 Raise to 1.026
Calcium 380 Raise to 420
Ph 7.7 Work on getting this up to 7.9
Potassium 370 Raise to to 400
Nitrate 30 Lower to 10 or less
Magnesium 1200 Raise to 1400
Iron 0,01mg/l at most!
Phosphate 0.2 Lower to .10ppm or less
Alk 7.7 Shoot for 7.0-7.5 dkh
