Clownfish Anemone Tank! Nemo Found!

I'm sorry about the nems. :(

I wonder why the B&W got too aggressive with the nems. just weird. I wonder if Occy's are really more aggressive than Percs.

so, what do you have left now... how many clowns?

Thanks Marvin. Yeah not sure about the nems the black and whites in my experience are more aggressive but don't know if that is the rule. I also wonder if the fact that they are tank raised makes a difference? I have 4 orange and white and 4 black and white ocellaris. I have 2 snowcasso type clowfish in the frag tank that his hooked up to the main system. The platinums I traded for 2 Helfrichi firefish. They are all getting along well. Two of the black and whites have paired off and are hosting the mushrooms which is funny.

my clowns do bite the tips of the BTA's but I thought this is normal. they don't hurt the BTA's from what I can see.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that. They were more biting into the flesh around the mouth. It looks like when they were being fed and were expelling waste they started biting at that first. I'm not sure exactly though as I was out of town and just came back to some very stressed anemones.

ah. I see. what did the BTA's do? just shriveled up and not open fully anymore?

Yes, they just did not fully close and then started melting away. I was able to save a few. Had to do a large water change too. It's a good thing I have a large volume.

ha ha, I was wondering when you were going to "nudge" me. I was thinking I needed to get some more pictures up but the front of the tank is full of magnetic frag racks right now LOL (group buys, sale threads..). I do suspect that it was the black and white clowns that were causing the damage to the anemones as there is one nice anemone that survived and is doing well and it is being hosted by the orange and white clowns. They keep the black and white ones away during the day.One orange and white ocellaris is starting to become more dominant and is getting much bigger in size. I am afraid to add more anemones because I'm afraid they will get damaged again.

I'm thinking what probably happened this summer is when I was out of town my brother was feeding them daily and when the nems started expelling the waste the clowns were a little overzealous in trying to eat this and the food he was giving them. As they were doing great when I left town and were all shrunk up when I came back.

I don't directly feed the anemones.

at least I waited 2 months before the nudge. ;)

so only one BTA left huh? what do the other clowns host now? what's the number of clowns left? hope you haven't lost any since the BTA's started withering away.

Still have 8 clowns. 4 orange and white 4 black and white and yes only one BTA left. several sadly melted away and I moved the other ones or sold them. The black and whites are hosting some blue mushrooms for now.

Ah, ok. Any change on the clown's aggression with less BTA's to share? Have you seen any of the clowns starting to establish who's gonna be the dominant pair?

No change in aggression Marvin. I think it helps that there is plenty of room and they are well fed. There is one orange and white that is clearly becoming dominant as she has greatly increased in size. It has always fascinated me how clownfish can change from male to female. You also gotta love that the female of the species rules the tank!!! :)

Ah. Thanks for the update. Good to know that the clowns are behaving even with only one BTA left. :)

Update more pictures!

This update is for you Marvin! 1smile1I haven't updated in a while thanks for nudging me along! The clown anemone tank is looking more like a mixed reef tank again! I lost quite a few of the anemones. I suspect the black and white clownfish were damaging them. :sad:I think it started when we were out of town and my brother must have been feeding the nems and when they were expelling waste they started biting on them. I was able to save and move a few but lost quite a few.

I traded the platinum pair and a nem for a pair of helfrichi firefish from Nick at Rosecity and the Picassos sadly were eaten by a maxi mini anemone. The orange and white and black and white ocellaris are doing well. I still have 4 of each. There is one nice anemone that has been doing well and it has been hosted by the orange and white clownfish. There is one orange and white that is clearly becoming dominant and now I'm pretty sure it was the black and white clowns that were injurhing the anemones because with her keeping them out of this one, it is doing well!

Some of the SPS I sold off are growing back from the remnants that were left behind of the sps I sold off!

It's difficult getting a good picture of the black and white clownfish

Did add some SPS

Well there it is. I probably won't be adding any more anemones since I'm worried that the black and whites will hurt them again. I'm not going to go too heavy with the sps as I still want to keep it as low maintenance as possible but that's the nice thing about this hobby. I never get bored because I can always change things around!

Thanks for the update Kim. Complete with pics. ;)

The BTA you have left looks cool with the purple tips.

Thanks Marvin. I wish I could add more BTAs but just don't want to risk it.

Figured I better post some pictures before Marvin sent me a gentle reminder....

Nice update Kim. So 16 clowns total? Thought for some reason you didn't have that much. Either way, looking good. :)
