Clownfish Anemone Tank! Nemo Found!

it's almost a month a no update? LoL. where are you Ms Kim? hope everything is well with the tank.

LOL I'm still here Marvin. Just nothing new to report. I'm pretty well stocked with anemones now. Right now still just have the 4 black and white and 4 orange and white ocellaris. Nobody has really paired off and they get along really well.

Yes, probably the biggest problem is originally this tank was designed to be an SPS tank so it has a lot of flow. I have found it is risky to add smaller anemones because sometimes they end up in the overflow and the filter sock. Fortunately they have survived. I did have the Vortechs off and I still keep them off for a few days if I add a new anemone but when they were at low flow I had too much trouble with cyano and hair algae and the other corals did not seem as happy. I think I have a happy balance.

Yes me too. I'm happy I can still keep other things like sps and chalices and zoas but can have the anemones. I can't just stick to one coral LOL. What is interesting is some of the sps I sold have grown back from little nubs and I'm getting small colonies again!

nice! I also have had my Vortech on dialed 3/4 full and things seem okay with it. I'd rather have it on to have the extra flow to keep things moving, although I didn't have any issues with any algae. when I add a few BTA's in the near future, I'll probably turn them off for a few days to get them settled and acclimate them slowly to the flow. a closed loop is the best for a clownfish/anemone tank... maybe next tank design. :wink:

Okay I cleaned the glass and snapped an updated picture. Please excuse the frag racks I'm in several different local growouts.:bigsmile: I have moved some of the anemones to my biocube as they kept ending up in the filter sock as they were going through the overflow.

As you can also see I have added back some sps and chalices. The anemones tend to stay in the center area. Still going to keep the SPS at a minimal number as I definitely have to dose calcium and alk much less now. Some of the anemones are also behind the rock so you can't see them.

Thanks! That's a Melanarus wrasse. Great fish in keeping pests down in the tank!

So far so good. Sadly I lost 2 picassos that I suspect got to close to a maxi mini anemone. I ended up trading the platinums for some Helfrichi firefish. Right now it's 4 orange and white and one black and white ocellaris. There is no obvious dominant clownfish at this time and everyone gets along well.

nice to see the update Kim. sorry to hear about the Picasso's. any plans on revamping the no of clowns or just keeping the remaining ones? how many total BTA's are left?

I was going to get some more juvenile picassos from the local breeder. He thought it would work out fine but sadly he is selling his business so I will probably just leave the total count at 8. As far as BTAS off the top of my head there are probably around 7.

Hey Marvin sorry just saw this post. Bad news!:tsk: All of the clownfish are doing well. However the Black and White Clownfish have killed a couple of the anemones:cry:. I stopped target feeding the nems because they were being to aggressive with them but when I was out of town my brother was caring for the tanks and was feeding them again. I came back to several stressed out anemones.I took some of them out but some didn't make it. It was not an issue of the anemones being too small as I had several really large nems but I could see them biting on the tentacles and tissue. There are a still a couple of anemones in the tank on the back that they are leaving alone.

So now I just have a clownfish tank. I have heard of this happening to at least one other reefer with his black and white clownfish that he got from the same breeder. Do you think this is possible because the clownfish were tank raised and never saw an anemone until I got them?

On the amusing side they are hosting the blue mushrooms that I have been unsuccessful in killing.

I wonder why the B&W got too aggressive with the nems. just weird. I wonder if Occy's are really more aggressive than Percs.

so, what do you have left now... how many clowns?
