Hello!
I recently purchased a Clownfish Breeding set up from another hobbyist. The setup came with 4 sets of “Egg-Laying” pairs, and 3 sets of “Bonded” pairs.

In this thread, I will document my journey of breeding, raising the fry, and the grow out.

I will start by introducing the pairs.

Today (5/28), the Maroons and the Photons both laid eggs.

When I acquired the Breeding set up, the former hobbyist included all of the clutches that he currently had on hand. Roughly 200 total babies/juveniles from 5 different clutches.

Can’t wait for these two pairs to begin laying eggs. The bullet holes shouldn’t be too far away, but the Frostbite/Flurry will be at least a year before they are ready.

Do they really prefer the flowerpots for egg laying? I've been hoping my clowns will lay eggs, but they on have Pukani rock to work with.

You have some gorgeous breeders. Do mind sharing information about the lighting and what else is in the sump (other than the skimmer? Also, I am assuming the panels between the glass are not clear - how are they blacked out? Thanks and continued best of luck!

Do they really prefer the flowerpots for egg laying? I've been hoping my clowns will lay eggs, but they on have Pukani rock to work with.

Clownfish will lay eggs on any flat surface when it comes time. I have seen anything from a flat rock to the overflow on an aquarium. Breeders tend to lean towards either a flowerpot or ceramic tiles like the ones below. Basically, most try to use something flat that may be removed from the tank.

Breeding is a lot of work as I’ve come to find out! Lol But very rewarding and a lot of fun! My kids have really enjoyed it and it’s pretty cool teaching them about the process! Hope your daughter gives it a go and has success!

Thanks Peace River! I was really lucky to find this setup locally! I can’t imagine how much and how long it would have taken to collect this many unique pairs.

I’d be happy to share more info on the set up! I will do so in my next post for sure along with future plans.

As for the dividers, the “Egg Laying” pairs are kept in a custom acrylic tank with black acrylic walls. Each section is basically a 10g tank of their own with drains and returns for each.

My “Bonded” pairs are currently in a tank with glass panels separating each. This is temporary until I can have partitions made for me.


I will post a more detailed post with pictures to better show the setup. My Wyoming White/Bali Aquarich pair are in the middle of preparing to lay eggs, so I am trying not to disturb them at the moment.

She is 25 so She can have at it she loved breeding Mollies when she was younger she has a Knack for breeding things. and more patients then I do I just finance it all still when she is 25 lol.

Awesome! Thank you in advance! I look forward to seeing what the fry from the lightning maroon look like - I have been fascinated with that strain every since Matt Pedersen started working with them but I have not kept them myself (yet!).
