Well...the Lighting Maroons have completed their hatch. Not nearly as many as I’d like made it, but for my very first clutch, I guess I should be happy to have the few dozen that I do!

Photons should all hatch this evening, then followed by the Wyoming White’s.

Also, I have gotten into the habit of cleaning their tank after each hatch along with their Clay Pot as needed.

Well...the completion of the 3 clutches of eggs has been completed.

Day 3 for the clown babies!

Many things I will be considering for the next hatch:

Water Quality in Brood Stock tank
-I need to get committed to more water changes and testing of the water parameters.
-While I was on vacation, I had a friend take care of the feeding and for some reason, my light timer didn’t work. I had a huge algae bloom and the tank was over run by algae.
-The algae bloom took place while I had 3 sets of eggs, and I was a bit nervous to do any sort of water change due to the possibility of harming the eggs.
-SKIMZ algae reactor will be added to the system to aide the Protien Skimmer to improve nutrient export.

Lighting During hatch night
-I have had different results with leaving lights on/off during hatch.

Method of removing babies/eggs
-With this hatch, I simply removed the babies after they hatched with a measuring cup which worked well.
-For the next hatch, I am going to attempt the Vossen Trap.

New batch of Rotifers came today! I currently have 2 cultures, but wanted to get another fresh batch up and running. I figured I would make a quick step by step post for anyone who might have any questions.

First thing to do is to acquire a container. I am using a clean white bucket. I prefer to use white so that I may see the color of the water. The water must remain a greenish tiny at all times.

Next, you want to make sure you’ve prepared your culture’s water to a salinity of 1.020. At this salinity level, the Rotifer culture will best thrive. I keep my cultures at room temperature as well.

Next, start with a nice fresh batch of Rotifers. This batch is from Carolina Reef Company.

Next, open the bag and pour in the entire contents.

Then, add the Rotifer’s food. I use RGcomplete-Super concentrated Marine Microalgal Feed.

I added in the RGcomplete with a pipette until the color of the water has a nice green tint.

Next, I use a lid to reduce evaporation with a hole for the airline tubing.

The instructions stated to allow 5 days before you harvest any Rotifers. After the 5 days, I begin to harvest the Rotifers for the babies. In my next thread, I will document that portion as I have come to find out this process is probably the most important to maintaining a healthy Rotifers culture.

Although I think automation is GREAT in most tanks, for me, in a breeding situation, I dont want to feel like I have that to rely on. I want to make sure I am forcing myself to look/attend to my tank multiple times a day- and with automization it is easy to get lazy. So much can happen so quick and although I know that, I also will think - well evererything is tested/does well-so, ill just go eat dinner/go to bed.

Yes, Breeding is a lot more hands on. Though, I can’t say that my reef tank automation makes me any more/less lazy. For me thus far, maintaining the breeding setup has many more things I need to do daily/weekly compared to my reef.

This is the second batch of eggs from the Bali Aquarich Black Picasso Pair since moving them. The pair actually laid eggs the day after transporting them, but the eggs were never fertilized.

I am looking for a few breeding pairs (proven w/pics/videos)
Also, I use fertility frenzy and my clutches have gone from nickel size to half dollar size. It is a bit pricey but it is well worth the investment. Premium Aquatics sells a flat for $22. Shipping is a little high but if you purchase more the shipping kind of evens out.
