Has the Clown been picking up sand with his mouth? If so it's most likely a bit of abrasion round his mouth.

Holy Molly, he was actually. Maybe he's trying to be a golbi. LOL.

No but serious in the sand and in the edges of the tank where the silicone hold the glasses.

Btw why they do that? Sry for the dumb question.

First of all let me put your mind at rest with regards to the juddering/vibrating/fitting behaviour. This is entirely normal if normal can be a thing with clowns! As mentioned above it is a show of submission. The curious thing is even in a fully mature pair either clown can at times display it although it is more often than not the male.

It is usually the male that also 'eats' the sand. What he is doing if they aren't an established pair is demonstrating his nest building. This usually takes the form of picking the sand up with his mouth and trying to clear an area for laying eggs. You may also see him fanning the sand with his tail for the same purpose or pecking at the rock with his mouth. I suspect the marking round his mouth is a result of this moving sand. Obviously you should keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get any worse but I should think it will clear up very soon.

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

thank you so much for sharing this. I'll keep my eye on them for sure. How long it usually takes for them to pair. I got them on Friday do you think it's time enough? For me they still have the same size which by the way it's tiny.

thanks

Happy mating! That’s all thats going on. Nothing to be worried about. I would get them an anemone if your going for full reef I seem to think that will be a good pair to host. Some clowns never do, but some do it immediately.

Hi John,

It shouldn't take very long for them to pair up, once dominance/ submission is established one of them should start to grow a lot faster than the other as it makes the transition to female. Pairing could take a couple of months but is usually much quicker. The main sign to look out for that they have bonded is the bigger size of one of them and that they will start to swim/sleep together most of the time. I'd hold off on the temptation to get a Nem for the moment however as your tank is still maturing and it could increase the bickering. Let them do their thing and establish the bond first.

For the record my 2 perculas are a bonded and have been with me for almost 7 years now. However I've never seen them spawn and the vibrating still goes on from time to time!

Amazing. Thanks a LOT to all of you.
