CLOWNS, How did you choose your pair???

I have an Oscellaris and a DaVinci. Went to LFS to get my first 2 fish in my tank in mid June thinking I was going to get 2 Oscellaris and ended up really liking the DaVinci - so I got one of each! Now that they have been with me for a month or so, I’m regretting not getting 2 DaVinci’s. Was going to trade the Oscellaris back and my daughter vetoed that. So, we have our mixed pair.

Got one as a Rescue, much latter took a picture of it. Headed to a LFS, and made sure I got a Smaller Clown. They are a pair and have laid eggs. Since my Aquarium is crowded with Coral, and I’m not set to raise them, no survivors.

The gf thought it would be a good addition and came home with three Clarkii, I personally don’t like clowns, but years later they are still around.

We have two Ocellaris Clowns I bought at my lfs. They immediately fell in love with each other and are inseparable. I don’t think I would add another, I don’t want to upset their union. They have only been in our tank for about two months tops.

Clarkiis are seriously one of the coolest, most animated, nicely colored fish out there. They are scrappy little guys and maybe that’s where hobbyists draw the line. Who knows? Congrats!

Orange Skunk Clowns.

Two for one deal at Petc*. They are a bonded pair. Inseparable still. Female I call Pennywise and the little male I call Gacy. Not original I know. Also ironic cause they are both angels.


To be fair I have only had them for a week, but I love them both now.

Two of them have paired up, the third is always close by, I don’t have nems in the tank, but they have rolled around in a large Japanese long tentacle, from there to a few torches and now hang out in a goni field. They are animated and stick to themselves, so all good.

I bought a bonded pair from Clownfish Corral - the female is a Black Darwin (named Feed Me) and the male is a Premium Blue Hue Black Ice (named Bite Me). I have had them since April and really like them. Both are super friendly - although he nips at me, hence his name (nothing serious though, more like a love bite).

So one Black and White Ocellaris and one Picasso Clown take up residence in my tank. It wasn’t always that way though. Originally, I had 2 Picassos. They spawned more than once but the female about a two year’s ago got dangerously thin and died. An internal parasite I believed. Sad. So I purchased a small Black and White clown. They looked good together. Still do.

In my 210 I have 1 monster 6 year old classic Nemo with a 1-ish year old black storm. The cow fish is the 5th clown to cohabitate with Ms. Nemo over that 6 years. (2 classic, 1 black and white and 1 Wyoming white that was 3 years old when he vanished)

In my 25 lagoon office tank I have a black storm and an ice storm. Both are about 2.5 years old.

In my 16 year old daughter’s Nano cube she has a 3 year old classic clown and a 2.5 year old Wyoming white.

I am attacked every time I put my hand in the tank and this has been the case with every Maroon I have ever owned. I am used to it and it does not bother me.

Started with a pair of 1" $19 Clarkiis 3yrs ago for my 75g reef tank. Out of 6 at LFS I chose the two closest in size and waited for them to figure out who was the dominate female. Well they did and now they are at least 3 1/2"+. Female is a nipper. Both love to mess up the crushed coral substrate. I move it back in place and next day or two they sweep it away again and/or pick a new spot to mess up. Very territorial especially when putting in new frag stand or small rock towers. They like to knock them over all the time. Never again… Trying to figure out how to catch them without trashing my aquascape to start over with smaller and nicer temperament Ocellaris or Percula.

Lady HAD to have a clown so we got an ocellaris. That was good for a minute then we HAD to have a pair. I pushed back until LFS had a solo orange storm male. His partner had been sold and to be honest I had been eyeing him (won’t tell her that tho). Brought him home and they’ve been doing swimmingly for about 6-7 months together. Do I like to mix em up? Umm… I guess.
