Been kicking around the idea of starting my own cultures. Who cultures their own? How hard are they to start a culture and keep it alive? Any do and don't? Tell me how you have your culture set up and if you have any, would love to see some pics. I know they will live in the fuge but I'm talking about their own tank. Any input would be helpful and appreciated.

I got several cultures going. I started with a 2 liter bottle with pods collected from tide pools on the Oregon Coast. In the bottle was some macro collected in the same place. These things are really almost bullet proof.
As of today I have the original 2 liter bottle, 1 spaghetti sauce jar, 1 jelly jar, and 1 salsa jar all in the kitchen window growing the little buggers. A couple times a week I add a few drops of Phyto feast. The water should be slightly stained green. With the natural sunlight this should "bloom" the phyto. I also add a few drops of selcon when I remember, probably a couple of times a month. I always have a very small thin strip of nori floating around on the top of the water. They seem to gravitate to the nori. Whenever i disturb the bottle / jars I can see them scattering from the floating nori. In the Jars I also have some chaeto from my fuge to give them a place to hide and breed. About once a month I take the oldest jar culture and gently set it in the fuge, with the top on at first to sort of temp acclimate them, then take the top off and set the jar on the bottom so they can swim out of the jar. Them I will pour about half a jar from the original 2 liter culture into that jar, refill the 2 liter with fresh saltwater and keep going.

Got any pics? Don't have a tide pool close to me, would know of a good place to get a starter culture?

I'm at work right now but I got mine from a guy in Portland. He runs MVP Coldwater Marine Aquatics. He collects fish and inverts for coldwater systems on the Oregon Coast. He will sell you a culture and ship it too. Here is a link to his website: COLDWATER MARINE AQUATICS. Nice guy. I went to his house to pick up mine. He ended up giving me a really nice live scallop to feed my Copperband when I first got him. Thats what really got him eating. E-mail him and tell him that rworegon from the PNWMAS board sent you. He should be able to help you out.

I spent four months stocking a 30g tank with enough to support a pair of seahorses indefinitely. I add a 6oz bottle of tiger pods once a month. Had the seahorses a couple weeks and thus far so good.

There is a post on my local forum where someone did the same thing as rworegon only he did it in solo cups. Got a starter bottle from a LFS and grew out from there. I will look and see if I can copy and paste it later...or maybe he will chime in here :)

Do you keep the containers closed at all times?

The 2 liter bottle is open, the jars have the lids just set on them. THe opening on the 2 liter bottle is so small that evap isn't a problem. I want enough air circulation to keep a gas exchange going so I don't screw the lids on the jars. About once a day I will take my feeding tongs and gently stir the contents, just one or two revolutions.

So you don't have to have air tube? I have a culture of nanno phyto growing, would that be used for the phyto feast? I would also like to see pics of your setup(if you get a chance). This sounds too easy.

Here are pics of what I'm doing in the kitchen window. pods in the window by rworegon, on Flickr Its kind of hard to see them in the pic but they are there swimming around, 2liter by rworegon, on Flickr and this is the newest one. Needs a bit more phyto, the water should be stained a bit more green but you can see the chaeto ant the nori floating on the top and a few pods, pods by rworegon, on Flickr
